Gingee Fort Overview

Ranked 3 of 30 sightseeing in Thiruvannamalai

Gingee Fort, which is also known by the name of Chenji Fort, is the only ancient fort that still stands in the region of Tamil Nadu. Located in the district of Villupuram, the fort was also referred to as the ‘Troy of the East’ by the British. Reference of the fort is also mentioned in the history as the fort praised by Chatrapati Shivaji himself. He ranked this fort as ‘one of the most impregnable fortress of India’.

The real Gingee fort that was built by the Chola Dynasty in the 9th century was relatively smaller than the current fort, which was rebuilt later on in the 13th century. The present form of the fort was attributed to the effort of Shivaji himself. However, the fort is not in proper conditions now but the architectural beauty is still worth seeing.

Great place to visit

Gingee Fort is a must watch place for people who love to watch historical monuments. I recently visited Gingee Fort on the month of October 2015. The entrance fee is also affordable even for a common man. Coming to the fort there are two divisions Raja Fort and a Rani Fort. The most interesting one is the Raja Fort. In Raja Fort there are many places like horse tank, elephant tank, gymnasium, granary, marriage hall where the Desingu Raja got married and for marriage between gingee people. There is also a 1000 pillar hall. It takes about one complete day to enjoy the raja fort completely. Magazines is the place where the ministry used to save the weapons which includes bomb and material needed to make the bomb. There are many secret ways to go to places like Vellore which are not opened for the People visiting the fort. The photos are not restricted anywhere in the fort.
