Image Of Lord Vishnu And Model Of Sao Gabriel

Once Goa's largest monastery the convent of St. Francis of Assisi, which was built in 1517, now houses the Archaeological Museum, established in 1964. A huge bronze statue of Alfonso de Albuquerque, moved to the museum, dominates the main entrance hall. Among the objects of interest are a finely carved image of Lord Vishnu and a Surya statue, dating to the Kadamba period, just of 11th-12th centuries, and stone inscriptions in Marathi and Persian relics of earlier ruling dynasties. Other exhibits include Hindu Sati stones, a model of Sao Gabriel the ship in which Vasco da Gama sailed to India in 1498, and a bronze statue of St. Catherine in the courtyard. The Portrait gallery on the first floor has 60 paintings of Portuguese viceroys and governors. Visit to this museum offers a lot to them about the kingdom of natural beauty.

ASI Museum & Portrait Gallery

If you love history and culture, the ASI Museum in the Convent portion of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi is the right place in Goa to learn more. It takes you back to a glorious period of the colonial ruling in the state. Several antiques are displayed here. You will get a fine picture of the Portuguese period in Goa through this exhibition. The collections are amazing and educative. A visit to this place is worth and highly recommended.

Glimpse of artwork and history of Goa

The museum is about 10 kms far from Panaji and is located in Old Goa area, just opposite to Basilica of Bom Jesus. The museum has many articles and stuffs on display and some of them are very well-preserved, connected with history of Goa. Many things like postage stamps, wooden articles, pillars etc are very nicely displayed.

Goa Tourism Board Must Promote This Place

One gets to know the Goan Culture and also the relics give a good knowledge of the rural Goa and its history. The artifacts are well organized with a theme for each gallery. Goa Tourism needs to adequately advertise this place for visitors to visit this museum.
