Golden Temple Overview

Ranked 1 of 45 sightseeing in Amritsar

The Golden Temple is a pilgrim spot for Sikh religious community,   located in the holy city of Amritsar. Popularly known as the Harmandir Sahib or Darbar Sahib, this gurudwara is acclaimed as one of the holiest sites of the Sikhs. Guru Ram Das Ji, the fourth Sikh Guru began the construction of this gurudwara in 1585 AD. The construction was completed by his successor, Guru Arjan Dev Ji in 1604.

Fondly known as Swarn Mandir, this two storied structure is covered with around 400 kg of gold. The temple is surrounded by a large lake, which is known as sarovar. This sarovar is considered to be filled of Amrit, which means 'holy water' or 'immortal nectar'. The water in sarovar is believed to have medicinal properties and curative powers and hence, devotees bath in the tank to cleanse their soul.

There is a narrow walkway of around 202 feet X 21 feet, which leads to the temple. There are four entrances to the temple that signify the importance of acceptance and openness. These doorways and arches reflect both Hindu and Muslim styles of architecture. Within the temple complex, there are shrines dedicated to the Sikh gurus, saints and martyrs.

The Guru Granth Sahib, which is the holy book of the Sikh, lies inside the Golden Temple. All the decoration and marble work of the temple dates back to 19th century. With the support of Hukam Singh Chimni and Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the temple was decorated with gold and marble work. Visitors are required to remove their shoes and cover their head before entering the temple.

This temple is one of the five TAKHTS of sikhism. It was built in 17th century . . The temple can be visited 24 * 7. Langar is available. It looks most beautiful at night. Also rush is less at night .

Wahe Guru

Glory and holiness of God enshrined in this breathtakingly beautiful temple monument. The beauty at night with the lights and cool gentle breeze adds to the allure, Bustling with bhakts and sevaks, the activity never stops, nor does the fervor. Eating the prasad was a very humbling experience.

Overall experiences would say worth visiting temple. The time of visiting will be both day time and night lighting at golden temple. No need to carry water bottles since water is provided by temple people anytime. Better leave your big bags in hotel and carry small hand bags.

Golden Temple a holy shrine one must pay a visit.

The sombre ambience of the holy shrine makes one bow down & pray irrespective of any religion, caste or creed . It's a destination we planned a long time & feel blessed to be able to be there . Elderly people doing seva & handling shoes & utensils of the visitors is a lesson to all visitors of all age . Kudos to the Temple Admin. For maintaining discipline in spite of huge rush.
