Foundation of Buddhist establishment by great patron Ashoka

Great Stupa of Sanchi is situated in Sanchi Town, District Raisen MP, India, and also marked as Stupa No. 1, at this ancient Buddhist Vihara. Emperor Ashoka who was the great patron of Buddhism, selected Yelagiri Hill now known as Sanchi Hill, for the foundation of a Buddhist establishment, because the hill ensured quietude and seclusion necessary for monastic life and also was situated close to the rich, populous and patronising city of Vidisha. This is a central attraction for all tourists may be National or Foreigners. Its centre was a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the remains of the Lord Gautam Buddha. The Great stupa is the oldest stone, brick structure in India. This work was commissioned by Emperor Ashoka in 3rd century BC, and later work was supervised and controlled by his wife Devi, who was the daughter of a merchant of Vidisha, Sanchi was her birthplace as well as the venue of her and Ashoka's wedding. Whole structure was surrounded by stone railing and four ornamental gateways were added in the first century BC by Satavahana king Satakarni, to beautify the structure and the structure was expanded by Shunga who took over the Mauryan Empire, with stone slabs to almost twice its original size. The dome was flattened near the top and crowned by three superimposed parasols within a square railing. It can be accessed by two staircase and having a circular pathway after and one at the ground. It was crowned by the chatra symbolizes the wheel of law, a parasol-like structure symbolising high rank, which was intended to honour and shelter the relics of Buddha and three tires signifies the Buddha religion as first Buddham saranam gacchami means I go to the Buddha for refuge, second Dhammam saranam gacchami means I go to the Dhamma for refuge and the third one Sangham saranam gacchami means I go to the Sangha for refuge in Pali language. During the reign of Kshatrapas of Malwa and Sanchi imported four Buddha's stone images and placed inside the railing of Great Stupa, facing the four entrances. Its an important Buddhist monument and world heritage, renowned around the world. This place must be visited to understand the Buddha's various teachings and the work executed by his followers even Before Christ. Visitors are not allowed with any bag, so just have camera and be anxious to witness this exceptional monument and visitors are requested to maintain the cleanliness at this place as dust bins are kept every where by the archaeological department and they are available to help the tourists, if someone wish to know about the history, they are pleased to guide.
