Gurdwara Pathar Sahib Overview

Ranked 7 of 106 sightseeing in Ladakh

A journey into the clouds is what you can expect, climbing to a height of 12,000 feet above sea level to reach the Gurdwara Pathar Sahib in the valley of Ladakh about 25 kilo meters from Leh.

Steeped in local folklore, the shrine is of religious importance with a historical milieu. It is said that a demon used to terrorise the inhabitants who prayed for recourse and Guru Nanak, whom the locals call Nanak Lama, came to their rescue and freed them of this evil fiend. The name “pathar” which means boulder is derived from the legend, which says the demon went into a rage seeing the people venerating Guru Nanak and pushed a large boulder down to kill him. However, the boulder turned into a soft ball of wax and stopped just as it touching him.

Built in the early 16th century to observe Guru Nanak’s visit to this valley, the Indian Army now maintains the Gurudwara.  Pilgrims and tourists flock to this beautiful spot all through the year by air, road or rail. Air travel is open throughout the year and is most comfortable. The plus point of driving along the roads that lead to this place is the scenic beauty which one can relish on a road trip. The best time of the year to visit the Gurdwara Pathar Sahib is between June and August.

Worth a visit

Beautiful story of a babaji for good over evil. Enjoy the langhar here. Enjoy the quad biking close by. Absolute peaceful. Close by you can go to magnetic hill. If you are on a bike enjoy the ride on the entire stretch of straight road .. :)

Peace and tranquility

The Gurudwara is maintained by the Army. The place is associated with Guru Nanak Ji's stay and meditation here in the sixteenth century. Spent some time here and sought blessings of Waheguru Ji.

Peaceful Gurudwara

Hat's off to the Army Jawans, and my humble salute. I went to this pleasantly peaceful Gurdwara on 25th April 2016, it's just 20 km from Leh and on the Highway to Kargil, so it's very easily accessible and every visitor to Leh should visit this absolutely blissful place and sit in silence to enjoy the positive vibrations over there. Hot tea and snacks are provided to every visitor and it's very tasty too, heard lunch is also provided during the lunch time, the Gurdwara has all the amenities for the visitors with ample car parking and washrooms at strategic locations.
