Gurudongmar Lake Overview

Ranked 1 of 1 sightseeing in Gurudongmar

Gurudongmar Lake is the biggest and one of the highest lakes in Sikkim. The lake is situated at a height of 17,100 ft and rests on the northern part of the Kanchenjungha Range. The name of the lake was adopted from the name of Guru Dongmar.

From November to mid-May, the lake remains frozen with the exception of one small portion, which is believed to have been touched and blessed by the Guru, who visited the place on his way to Tibet.

This lake is highly revered by Buddhists. The stream originating from the lake is one of the major sources of River Teesta. The water of this lake is believed to possess medicinal properties.

Adjacent to the lake, there is a ‘Sarva Dharma Sthal’, frequented by people of all faiths. However, due to paucity of oxygen at the site, it is better not to stay overnight at the destination.

A life time experience

Gurudongmar lake is located at an extreme corner of India and to visit the lake, an overnight stay is essential at Lachen which is a small beautiful town in North Sikkim and the nearest tourist accommodation center also. Lachen is 68 km away from Gurudongmar lake, so after an overnight stay at Lachen we started our journey at 5 am with our packed breakfast. Journey was for three hours with engulfing the splendid scenic beauty and snow covered high altitude mountains were coming closer gradually when our car moving nearest to the lake. At an altitude of 17, 100 ft Gurudongmar lies in the north side of the Kanchenjungha range & also is encircled all around by snow covered mountains. It's a sacred & one of the highest lake in the world. Due to high altitude breathing problems may occur. Despite of difficulty or hardship, one time visit to the lake as an experience of a lifetime.

Gorgeous Gurudongmar

We went on a family trip to Gurudongmar lake, situated in North Sikkim, in the third week of May this year. We started our journey from Gangtok. It was a 2 night-3 day package trip, covering Lachen, Lachung, Gurudongmar, Yumthang and Zero point. On day 1, we set out for Lachen from Gangtok around 10 a. M. Throughout the day we were pleased to find that the meandering way was decked with a number of waterfalls; some of them were vigorous, whereas the others were sleek. We had our lunch at a roadside eatery. We reached Lachen at 7 in the evening. On day 2, we set out for Gurudongmar lake from our hotel at Lachen in the wee hours of the morning. It was a foggy morning and scattered drizzles drenched our way. Most of the stretch of road from Lachen to Gurudongmar was bumpy and full of potholes. As our SUV scaled upward, the landscape changed gradually. The lush greenery in the hill was getting replaced by grey rocky mountain, capped with white snow. Then at around 11 in the morning we reached a spot which was a cold desert. The Gurudongmar lake, located above 17000 ft, welcomed us with its serene calmness and a sombre gravity. Although there was not much ice around, it was a fascinating view. We stayed there for an hour . One thing must be remembered while going to Gurudongmar. People of all age can feel a breathing trouble for the high altitude. So one should carry camphor or some medicine.

The most spectacular place in Sikkim

The Gurudongmar experience will leave you spellbound. The lake and its surroundings are amazingly beautiful and the drive to the lake, especially the part from Thangu to Gurudongmar, takes the whole experience out of this world. The trip can be exhausting, but the rewards are spectacular.Thangu and Gurudongmar have low oxygen levels because of high altitude (>15000 feet), so its advised that you take it easy and not exert yourself - no running, walking slowly, no shouting, taking short breaks, etc. Most of the people around us were doing quite fine, but you can help your body by doing things like drinking lots of fluids (but no alcohol) and popping Diamox (Acetazolamide) tablets starting a couple of days before the trip. There are a few steps at the lake and it's a very good idea to climb them very slowly and one at a time. Also, multiple layers of warm clothing are recommended because temperatures usually fall below zero and it can get windy. If it's sunny, sunscreen is also advised. You have to start early morning from Lachen (5-6 am). Most people arrive in Lachen on previous day and spend a night. The drive from Lachen to Thangu (~2 hours), where almost everyone stops for breakfast, is bumpy & long but the scenery is nice. The idea is to reach Thangu check-post around 7-8 am. It's recommended that you eat something hot here like tea, Maggi or soup and locals will also tell you that eating popcorn or dark chocolate helps with the altitude. The bumpy road continues till the next army check-post but the views start getting more and more spectacular. Trees disappear and the bareness of the mountains is all around. After the second check-post, the road suddenly becomes flat and the views become other-worldly - the whole scenery changes from a mountainous terrain to a barren plateau with snow-covered mountains in the distance. Spectacular. Within 15 minutes, you are at the lake. The lake itself is beautiful - crystal clear and surrounded by white mountains. There's a small temple here even though the surrounding nature is enough to humble you down. There are a few steps that go down to the lake, where you can dip into the cold water, but you have to be careful while coming back up because of breathlessness. There are Tibetan prayer flags floating here and there - the only bright colors in the scenery. The whole area is pristine, calm and serene. It is not advised to stay very long at the lake because of the oxygen thing, but you can linger for an hour or so (if you can handle it). Apparently you have to leave this place by 11 am or so because after that the weather can get very nasty. While coming back, it's nice to drive a little slower and take in the beauty of the plateau and the mountains. During our trip in May, there was fresh snow from previous night everywhere while going up but while coming back, all of it had melted and everything was sparkling in the bright sunlight. Amazing.

Unbelievably Beautiful !!!

Glorious Gurudongmar!!! Sacred Lake!!! I went to this Picturesque, Peaceful, Scared, Calm, Serene, Blissful and Absolutely Stunning Lake on 26th March 2016. My journey started as early as 3.30am, it's about. 60-70km from Lachen and it takes almost 4 hrs including checkpost stops and breakfast stop, reached this wonderful lake at 7.30am, one side of the lake was frozen, and on the other side, it's brilliant Blue color water, the complete setting is so Beautiful!!!In 8th century AD, Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rimpoche) the founder of Buddhism and Guru Nanak the founder of Sikhism visited and took bath in this Sacred lake.Without visiting this fabulous Lake our tour of Lachen won't be complete, we should get the permit before coming to this lake, our travel agent will take care of it, I should thank Mr. Bikas Lama(of Travel Sahyog)my travel agent for getting my permit, arranging the car and making my journey comfortable.

Pristine Beauty but a Challenging trip

Gurudongmar Lake is really a serene and pristine beauty with snow capped peaks in the backdrop. It is situated at 17610 feet altitude so one can imagine the oxygen levels over there - Biting cold and difficulty in breathing. It is 76 km from Lachen and the road to that lake from Lachen, Sikkim (126km from Gangtok) is completely rocky making the journey really strenuous and tiring. It is located near Cho Lhamu Lake (From where Teesta River originates). You don't get a permit to that place easily for it snows almost all round the year and is in a restricted place (just convince the driver). The last few miles before reaching the lake, the road well laden amidst the vast plains and barren hills forms an awesome scenery. The journey was indeed beautiful but challenging. It is still worth it!

Heaven in this small state

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!. Well this is a worth of adventure. It's a heaven on the earth. Snow clad mountains and the frozen lake. Well I visited in November end which was not the season for snowfall so we missed the snow, but the mountains were fully covered with snow. Also the lake had just started freezing, the upper cover was frozen. We started it at 3. 00AM from Lachen a remote town in North Sikkim, and by 7. 30AM we reached Gurudongmar. In between there was a stop at military camp, we got out of Car and it was like OMG. The temperature was around -10 degree. There was a camp fire in military camp and we rushed toward it. Hot coffee was the best thing over there. It was a great experience. More worth of taking the risk of such adventure. MUST EXPLORE spot in Sikkim.

The Mesmerizing Gurudongmar Lake, Sikkim

Well it took me 4 attempts to visit this Beauty. Once you are at the lake, you'll forget all the pain that you have experienced to reach here. This lake will mesmerises you with its beauty. To visit this lake, you have to start early morning and return by noon as visitors are not allowed to travel to this lake after 12:00PM. Don't forget to carry all your winter gears and carry some more if possible as the weather is freezing cold here. Also carry dry fruits and popcorn which are available on the way, it helps you battle the cold weather. As the oxygen available is less than 4% so you are advised to walk slowly and rest in between. Because of the condition and weather, you are advised to return within 30-45 minutes as you will have trouble breathing thereafter.
