Ranked 8 of 40 sightseeing in Hampi

The Hazara Ramaswamy temple is located at the heart of the historical town of Hampi. It is a small temple in comparison with the others at Hampi. The outside walls of the temple are decorated with sequences from the Ramayana. Till now, this is the only temple with such carvings on the outside walls of the temple compound.

The temple has a blanket of green lawn from which a mud path is seen. This leads to the Pan Supari Street further down. Close to this temple are the Zenana Enclosure and the Lotus Mahal.

At the north-east corner, the Danaik’s enclosure and the underground Shiva temple can be found. There are many more shrines and pillars inside the temple premises.

Ramayana in just 3 Parikrama

Hazara Rama Temple at Hampi is yet another example of the great craftsmanship of Indians. The sculptures, carvings, story embedded on the walls are breathtaking. The entire temple wall from the outside has 3 layers of picture depiction about Ramayana. You take 1st Parikrama to start seeing and understanding the start of Ramayana which is continued to the 2nd and finally ends with the 3rd layer. It is truly a very good way to explain kids about the entire Ramayana story as visual and practical exposure is always worth while.

Life of Rama in 1000 sculptures

Hazar means 1000 and the temple of Hazara Rama have the whole life of Lord Rama catalogued in these 1000 sculptures. Every monumental moment in the life of Rama is carved, in long arrays, onto the walls of this temple. The unique feature of the temple is that it is the only temple yet which has carvings on its compound wall.

Dedicated to lord Rama

This temple is next to the palace. This is believed to be the worshipping place of the kings and queens of this region, this is built by krishnadevaraya. In memory of his expedition. The whole story of old epic ramayana is engraved on the outer walls of the main temple inside. There is another temple to the right where its inner walls are engraved with the story of lava and kusha, the sons of lord rama. There is no deity inside both these temples. This is maintained by ASI and is a world heritage site. Do carry water, caps, cameras, shoes, umbrellas.

Must see at least once, a masterpiece in stone

The panels on the walls of the temple brings out neatly that popularity of Ramayana in this country. The important scenes from the epic is carved in detail in these panels. Even though this not a very big complex if the sculptures on the wall makes you spend more time. This was supposed to be a private temple for the royal family, built by Devaraya I in 15th century. Apart from Ramayana there are panel on the wall indicating trade and culture during Vijayanagar empire

This temple is adjacent to the palace, it is replete with engravings of yoga postures, Gods, Goddesses and Dashavatara. The forty eight layers of engravings are dominated by Vaishnavite cult. There are small dilapidated temples nearby.
