Himalayan Mountaineering Institute Overview

Ranked 9 of 77 sightseeing in Darjeeling

The mighty Himalayas are every mountaineer’s ultimate dream. If you have the courage, the stamina and you want to try something different, you must check out the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) at Darjeeling. The HMI is one of the oldest mountaineering institutes of the country and has played a pivotal role in training mountaineers across the country.

The institute is situated on the western spur of Birch Hill and has a commanding view of Darjeeling’s tea gardens as well as the snow clad peaks of the mighty Kanchenjunga.

To give impetus to mountaineering as an organized sport in India and commemorate Norgay and Hillary’s historic conquest of the Everest, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) was founded in Darjeeling with the personal initiative of Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India.

The HMI is renowned for its competent and star-studded faculty that included luminaries like Tenzing Norgay and winners of the nation’s highest adventure award winners. The Institute offers courses at highly subsidized rates along with excellent training and boarding facilities. Courses range from the basics to advance techniques of mountaineering.

The Institute has a good collection of historically significant photographs including some great mountaineering films, which are a treat to watch. The mountaineering museum is the primary attraction to visitors here. The adventurous will love the international standard outdoor artificial climbing wall that has a pavilion for spectators.

Inspiring place

HMI is a legendary place, a lot of people train here for climbing Himalayan mountains. For tourists, the main attraction is the museum attached to the institute that chronicles in detail many of the famous climbs in the past, including a special section on Mt Everest. It feels inspiring to read the amazing stories of the many mountaineers and see the many things related to those expeditions. Tenzing Norgay's final resting place is also here along with a statue commemorating his Everest climb.

Himalayan Zoo & Mountaineering Institute

It's a nice walk from the main gate to the Zoo leading to the Mountaineering Institute and back. The museum has a lot to offer for people interested in mountaineering or adventure for that matter. A lot of historical facts on mountain expeditions are available for the taking. The zoo was really sad. This place boosts of the Himalayan Red Panda but you'll be really fortunate to spot one.A pleasant weather will make the stroll beautiful.Cameras are not allowed inside the museum, however you are allowed to click pictures of the animals in the zoo.

Enter to be thrilled

The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute or the HMI as it's popularly known is repository for India's great mountaineering history. Complete with facts and figures, it takes you through a thrilling experience of showcasing mountaineering both as a sport and hobby. It has an awesome display of clothes worn by mountaineers as they surmount icy peaks. The clothes worn by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary along with pictures are also available. Located inside the Darjeeling zoo, it simply cannot be afforded to be missed at any cost. Tickets are common for both attractions.

The apex body in mountaineering techniques

Himalayan Mountaineering institute is an apex body in mountaineering technology. It is in the city itself & is 1. 5 km north of city centre by the side of main road. Padmaja Naidu Zoological Park is also functioning in the same compound. In the institute the techniques & technologies in mountaineering science is well taught & well trained. A well arranged museum is also functioning on the upper side of the complex. The various tools & accessories used in mountaineering the stress & strain behind this attempt the eminent leaders behind this science, the clay model of Himalayas more details regarding Tenzing & Hillary etc are well explained & well pictured. In the extreme end mountain for practice are also seen. All infrastructures for an apex training centre are available there. The zoo in the compound is also good but the number of items are limited. Restaurant is also working in the complex area. The entry is through tickets.

Nice place to visit but could have been better maintained

The HMI gave me a great perspective off how difficult & rigorous mountaineering is and what climbers go through in reaching the summits. Lot of history about the place though it has some missing exhibits. Lots of photos and records of record breaking achievements and tragedies. Get an idea of the equipment used over the decades to conquer Everest. There is a model that offers a great perspective of the great Himalayas and how the mountain ranges stretch over various states and nations. There is an air of solemnity around the memorial for Tenzing Norgay. All in all a nice visit combined with the zoo.

An Institute with an unparalleled history

It is one of the most visited spot of Darjeeling after Tiger Hill. It is situated in the same hill top as the Zoo and also shares the same main entrance. One has to cross the zoo to reach the Institute. The climb to the Institute is however very steep. The Museum inside the Institute is a must see spot to learn about the history of the various Himalayan Expeditions undertaken and also to expand your knowledge about the changes that have taken place over the years with regard the kits and equipments used in Mountaineering expeditions right from the very first expedition till date. Photography is however strictly prohibited inside the Museum.
