I traveled to Ooty recently by my own car and the experience was very good except for few patches here and there Bangalore-Mysore : Roads are good all the way (Better to take the kanakapura route instead of maddur route). Mysore-Ooty - I took this route : Mysore - Srirangapatna - Gundlupete - Theppakadu - Masanigudi - Ooty . This Route has good roads but the 2 national parks (Bandipur and Mudumalai have a lot of speed-breakers. One should be ready to cross them patiently . Once you cross the national parks, we enter Ghat sections . The roads are good, but very steep in some places . The experience is very good .

Mode of Transport:Bus
Bus which was expected to depart at 6:00 am departed at 8:00 am. We were made to wait in the bus stand with no information on departure of bus. Added to this, bus quality was not up to the mark. Thanks to the delay, we got caught in the mess and traffic jam that is Bangalore- Mysore Highway and Reached Mysore at 2:30 pm a good 2 1/2 hours behind schedule. We had to skip lunch since the crew wanted to make up time. Ultimately, we had our lunch at a place closer to Ooty. In all this, we will be failing if we do not mention the exemplary behaviour of staff both the driver and conductor. They took us safely in the difficult driving conditions despite the bus being not in very good shape. They are our real heoroes. Only collects money but does not care for any one.

Ooty as a place has become a nightmare with overcrowding and dirty surrounding. Tourists also do not help matters. They behave in a boorish manner and do not maintain decorum. Least priority is given to cleanliness with plastic strewn around everywhere and left over food. This is more so in...more »

The journey to Ooty from Bangalore is full of scenic views, which gets even better as you approach the hill station.
It goes through Bandipur National park which then turns into Mudumalai National park once you cross the Karnataka Border and enter Tamil Nadu. The last part of the stretch is the highlight of the journey, where one can find 36 hair pin bends, cutting through the hills.
One can enjoy the famous Bandipur Safari along the way, but it should always be planned well in advance due to the rush over there.
Important Info: You will not be allowed to cross the Bandipur region via road from 8 p. M in the evening to 6 a. M in the morning. So the journey should be planned accordingly.

We had a good experience by travelling in a car so that we can see as many places as we can but one thing is we had visited in rainy season whenever we had to stop at any place we need not have to ask others to stop, never go short way.
