I traveled by my own car, the Roads to Yercaud are very well maintained.
This was the route I took:
Bengaluru - > Hosur -> Krishnagiri -> Dharmapuri -> Salem -> Yercaud.
There were 20 Hair Pin curves on the way, and the drive was wonderful.
The Hair Pin Bends were well marked and roads are wide enough to accommodate 2 cars easily.
Totally good drive.

The trip is very exciting and enjoyable. Yercaud is a very small hill station town. So, suggest you to take your own vehicle roam around.
There are Great Roads all the way you can drive up to speed 100km/hr.
We started early morning at 6. Am from Bangalore and took the Hosur road to connect to NH 7. Early you start lesser time you have to wait in the toll zone. We took break at krishnagiri, after seeing the scenery and it was high time for some clicks.

If you are looking for a weekend drive away from the Bangalore city, Yercaud is one of the best options.

It's around 250KM from the Bangalore and till Salem you can cruise on the Highways at the good speeds. There are a lot of good places to eat on the way.

We left early around 6 AM and stopped for the breakfast once we crossed the city. It's a good food joint with CCD, and other south Indian restaurants, you can find easily on the left side along with the HP petrol pump after crossing around 50KM from the city.

The highways are bliss till you reach Salem. If you love corners then 20 hairpins on the way to Yercaud won't disappoint you for sure.

I stayed at Sterling resort, which has good location and ambience. The spa experience is rejuvenating. On the other hand, I felt the food was average as per the prize.

Overall, it's a wonderful weekend getaway :)

Note: Don't follow the google maps till you reach Salem. Google maps show a shortcut to reach Yercaud before we reach Salem, which leads to the horrible small roads through the hills and woods. The road condition is very bad and that too its very steep. I had trouble even switching to 2nd gear on most of the turns. As its very remote section so not safe too.

The best way is to reach Salem first and then use the exact destination in Yercaud.

The journey to Yercaud is extremely scenic and smooth. The roads are maintained really well considering we went in the monsoon season and I was 7 months pregnant. Despite driving with great caution we reached within 4 hours and covered a distance of 220 kms from home to the hotel even stopping for about 15mins for tea !!

The hotel is located about a km from the Yercaud Lake. I was 7months pregnant when we stayed here, I am saying this since the hotel itself on a slope therefore not advisable for people with walking up problems and pregnant women. However the manager was kind enough to offer us a room very close...more »

My journey was on a bike and not a car. We were just 2 on 1 Karizma and the journey was around 250 km per side. So this was a matter of concern assuming the roads may not be good. We started our ride around 4:30 AM from Bengaluru and took the Ecity flyover and continued on the Hosur road. Make sure that you get out of Hosur before the sun rises, as the town traffic can spoil your mood.

You can have a splendrous breakfast at Krishnagiri - which has A2B, McD and others by the highway. No issues finding the Petrol bunks as they are available throughout the journey. The roads throughout are absolute butter, making the journey a memorable one. Almost no pit holes anywhere.

Use your GPS after you enter the Salem town, as the city traffic may confuse you and take you on the Coimbatore highway.
The journey up-hill is dangerous but lovely.

The up-hill has 22 hairpins but the roads are were maintained and broad enough to cut through the hairpins. But one has to be really careful.
Book your resort in advance and have a pleasant stay. Plan in the monsoon / winter. I can guarantee that if your day of journey is favored by the weather God, this journey might be one your bests.

Best when travelled on own vehicle, much better if that's a bike. 20 hair pins lead you to this jewel of South. Places of attraction - Yercaud lake, pagoda point, Lady's and gent's seat, Waterfalls.
