Took the Krishnagiri, Salem, Avinashi route. Roads are excellent all the way through barring a few patches on the climb from Mettupallayam. Travelled with 2 kids, aged 4 and 2. No complaints from them either. Plenty of food stops on the way. Fuel also is available on the way.

Mode of Transport:Flight
To get to Coonoor from Chennai by air, you have to take a flight to Coimbatore, which is about two to two and a half hours away. The time taken to Coonoor from there depends on the traffic as well as the driver. You have to take the road that by passes Coimbatore and skip the town altogether to save an hour or so. Its a nice ride but nothing extraordinary until you reach Mettupalayam,, where you have to go through the town and sometimes the traffic can hold you up a bit. From the foot of the hills the ride gets better - the temperature gradually gets cooler and the scenery is really beautiful.

I chose Jet Airways as, as a frequent traveller, I have been almost exclusively using this Airline since the time it started flying. As it is a short flight you hardly have the time to properly evaluate the in flight services. On the ground they are pretty good and ,of late, I notice that the ground staff have become a bit more polite.

Chennai airport, for all the negative feedback is not too bad. It is easily accessible from various points in the city and there are enough call taxi operators to get you there and to take you back when you return. There are quite a few shops and cafes, as well as a bar and a spa to help you pass the time.

At destination, Coimbatore is a much smaller airport with a restaurant cum bar, a couple of shops and snack bars.

The official taxi counter can book you a cab to Coonoor, Ooty and other towns at fairly reasonable rates.

Coonoor is where I was born and brought up so I tend to look at this holiday destination through rose tinted glasses. Notwithstanding my bias, the crowds that throng the town, not only in summer, but all year round, are testimony to its popularity Smaller than the more famous Ooty and less...more »

Mode of Transport:Train
Comfortable train - nice journey - always preferred this train. Timing is most comfortable. Get in, sleep, get out early in the morning. Generally found neat, the food is passable, usual, bed-sheets two pairs, napkin and heavy rug. Not very comfortable with these at times as one gets stale smell.

Chennai to Erode in a different route without Toll, but reasonably good road condition and also lot of greenery and a bit of ghat section. Route : Chennai - Kanchipuram - Tiruvannamalai - Harur - Salem - Erode. Night halt at Erode, then proceeded to Coonoor via Mettupalayam. Return Mettupalayam - Sathyamangalam - Mettur - Dharmapuri - Tirupattur - Odugathur - Vellore - Chennai.

KPN bus service is good. we booked for A/C semi sleeper bus, they changed it to A/C sleeper with no extra charges since it was unavailable.
