Indian Botanical Gardens Overview

Ranked 8 of 8 sightseeing in Alipore

Visitors interested in watching the numerous species of plant and flora can visit the Indian Botanical Gardens located 8 km from Kolkata in the suburb of Shibpur in Howrah district. Colonel Kyd founded the garden in 1786, which aimed at producing different plant species.

Presently, this garden is home to around 12,000 plants that are alive and dried plant specimens around half a million. It also has a collection of the rarest species of trees and plants from Nepal, Java, Penang, Sumatra and Brazil, which are safely preserved in the herbarium.

The garden is renowned for supposedly the oldest Banyan Tree in the world, which stands on an area of 404 sq. meters. Though the main trunk of the tree had to be removed in 1945 due to infection, its 1573 branches are still providing support to the tree. There are also aquatic plants in the garden, which are a must watch for the tourists.
