Indian Institute Of Advanced Study Overview

Ranked 4 of 40 sightseeing in Shimla

The Indian Institute of Advanced Study was built during 1884-1888 during the British rule in India. Housed in Viceregal Lodge atop Observatory Hill, the premise is encircled by pine trees and gardens.

Visitors can explore the entrance hall and gardens of the institution, as the rest of the monument is closed for public. The British mansion was constructed by Lord Dufferin in the European style and was designed by Henry Irvine.

One of the highlights of the institute is the teak-panelled interiors. Along with this, the entrance portico, the reception hall, grand staircase and fireplace are the other highlights.

The state drawing room, ballroom and the wood-panelled dining room and an indoor tennis court draw a lot of visitors. The highlighting feature of the ancient Viceregal Lodge is the Burma teak interiors along with gracious grey sandstones.

The Indian Institute of Advanced Study has been a historic centre that hosted events like Simla Conference and Simla Agreement in the years 1945 and 1947. Post independence, the Viceregal Lodge became the summer retreat of the President of India. Thereafter, the decision to transform the residential seat into a museum known as Indian Institute of Advanced Studies was taken.

Please don't visit as it's only lawn area, wait for your turn and visit inside

Worth the 1 hour wait since the next 2 batches was already full. The visit inside includes a 30 mins detailed tour of the ground floor of this awesome building since the upper floors houses research scholars. Really worth the visit inside the building after the wait. Don't miss the cafe at the end of the building, that offers a beautiful view of nature. This is not the one near the entrance. Please go to the one at the end of the building for the nice views of nature.

Very good place

I visited this place during summers. Here it was really cool. I visited the museum it was awesome I felt as if I am watching the past from a window. This place used to be the house of Lord dufferin (the then viceroy of India). Shimla conference was held here in 1945 and the decision of carving out of East and west Pakistan was taken here. I moved out of the building it was about 5:30 pm and took a walk in the front garden and I must say the view from here was very good. I then ordered a paratha from the canteen and a cup of tea and walked to my place.

Very old place and worth seeing

The place is more than century old and it's an architectural marvel, it offers guided tour and one must take it. Rare photographs are worth seeing, nice view and one gets to know about the history of India and related facts through pictorials.

Must place to visit to appreciate architecture

Its an awesome place to watch beautiful Scottish baronial style architecture. It had been Presidential residence in summers. Also, historically discussions on Indian partition happened here.I had not seen such a beautifully preserved architecture. Unfortunately, clicking photos inside the beautiful part of IAAS is not permitted. Do visit this place in the morning so that you can enjoy ridge in the evening. It remains closed on mondays.

A must see place when you visit Shimla

A majestic building. Great architecture. Huge space and beautiful lawns. Historical relevance. A must visit place especially with kids and families. Ideal for picnics. Take a walk along the entire route. It houses the IIIAS now. But still they allow to take a guided tour inside.. Located in vicinity of HP university. A complete tour can be combined with a visit to nearby state museum.

Excellent architecture. The place is research institute based in Shimla was setup by govt in 1964. The building originally built as a house of Lord Dufferin, Viceroy of that time and it was build during 1884-1888. Excellent building to visit. You need to buy enter ticket to see the place. There are 2 types of ticket one for only to see the outside and another to go inside of the building.
