Balasinor Dinosaur Fossil Park near Ahmedabad

India has a lot of hidden places which are not yet on the tourist map. Once such off beat location we visited has a dinosaur fossils park, located about 80 km from Ahmedabad. It is said to be the second biggest fossilised dinosaur hatchery in the world. We drove down to the place with the help of Google Maps as there are no signages leading to that place. The only one we noticed was just 1 km before the site! The roads were excellent all the way.The guide available there told us that this 72 hectare fenced area has about 10, 000 fossilised dinosaur eggs. He told us that some 6. 5 to 13 crore years back, which is known as "Cretaceous age" and which follows the now famous Jurassic age, the dinosaurs roamed this place in Gujarat, lived and perished here. Hence some of them are unique to this place and one of them has been named "Rajasauras Narmadensis". It s similar to T-Rex but has a horn and some adornment on its head, hence named like a Raja. Since some others fossils of this dinosaur were found on banks of Narmada in MP, the second name is after the river. 6. 5 crore years back the life on earth came to an end due to a supposed meteor hit, bringing an end to these creatures. This discovery was accidentally made in 1980-81, when geologists came searching for lime reserves for a cement plant. The fossils are embedded in the rocks and strewn over a very wide area. It took us about an hour to see the fossils in the nearby area, but we could not see the eggs as they were a distance away and vehicles cannot go there. The larger fossil bones have been removed to Kolkata and Jaipur locations of Geological survey of India. A gem of a historical site which is slowly gaining popularity and worth a visit if it is your area of interest. The current generation of royal a family of Balasinore, the Babi clan (yes, same family roots as Parveen Babi), are taking keen interest in spreading knowledge of this prehistoric place. They have a museum in the erstwhile palace which we could not visit, but maybe next time. The government is working to make this place a tourist attraction, all with a museum, gardens and vantage points for visitors, but it is work in progress and seems to be a one or two years away.As one leaves this place, one can't help but be overwhelmed by the immensity of the time gone by and the end of dominance of this great creation. The place is a great weekend destination from places like Ahmedabad and Vadodara
