Island Museum Of Nagarjunakonda Overview

Ranked 2 of 2 sightseeing in Nagarjunakonda

Nagarjunakonda has a museum that is located in the midst of the manmade Nagarjunasagar Lake. Built in the shape of a Buddhist Vihara, the museum houses a collection of relics of Buddhist art and culture. The main exhibits are a small tooth and an ear-ring, believed to be of Buddha. The most important stupa of Nagarjunakonda, is known as Mahachaitya and is considered to include the sacred relics of the Buddha. The chief attraction at the museum is a partly ruined monolithic statue of Buddha.

The island is named after the Buddhist monk, Nagarjuna, who lived around the 2nd century AD and was the exponent of the philosophy of Sunyata. He was the master of Mahayana Buddhism in South India. Statues, coins, jewellery and friezes found at the site are housed in the museum and provide an insight into the daily lives of the people of this ancient Buddhist centre. The site was discovered in 1926. Consequently, excavations in the 1950s and 60s, have uncovered the remains of stupas, viharas, chaityas and mandapams.

Due to the availability of regular ferry services to Nagarjunakonda and regular bus services connecting Hyderabad, Warangal, Vijayawada and Guntur with Nagarjuna Sagar, it is easy to reach this place. The ferry leaves from Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, taking about an hour and a half to reach the island. The ticket counter for the ferry shuts down at 2 pm.

Not only educational and but also aesthetic

This museum has an open place museum as well as inner one. Open place museum constitutes big rock carvings of Buddha. It left us awestruck despite not being in a good state. It is not only educational and but also aesthetic.
