Jahangir Mahal Overview

Ranked 3 of 37 sightseeing in Orchha

The Jahangir Mahal also known as ‘Rani Mahal’ is situated in the fort complex of Tikamgarh District of Orchha and is particularly famous for its paintings and architecture. It was built in the 17th century. The east-facing location of this ‘mahal’ also provides a panoramic view of the River Betwa. This palace was the residence of Queen of Raja Madhukar Shah. The main room of the queen in the palace was decorated by a devotee of Lord Ram, with mural paintings depicting scenes from Hindu mythological epics. The main paintings present in this room portray Bhima and birds flying with elephants.

The Rani Mahal was basically built in the honour of the visit of Jahangir to the city of Orchha. This is why this palace displays a mix of Indian and Islamic architectural styles enhanced by its ornate gateway. The Mahal is a three-storied one with hanging balconies, terraces, apartments, and onion domes forming part of its structure. The front of this mahal has turquoise tiles and stone elephants with bells in their neck, which were used to announce the arrival of the emperor in ancient times.

Finest piece of Architecture

The Jahangir Mahala is one of the main Palace that is shown everywhere when you search Orchha on internet. Jahangir Mahala is really worth of all appreciation. The Bundel King made this Mahala to gift the Maugham king Jahangir. Bundel kings had a very good relation with Jahangir and king Jahangir had also a deep interest in art and architecture. On that era the 5 story building in itself was a piece of wonder. Its been century but the charm is still there.

Simplicity is the key to Orchha's beauty.

Orchha is a small town with the river Betwa flowing in the middle of it. It is easily accessible by road and rail. It carries both spiritual and historical value for a traveller. Orchha, apart from its many attractions, is also well known for its Khoya(Mawa) and the sweets made out of it. Kalakand made of Khoya is available at every shop in the town and is treat for anyone with a sweet tooth. The most appropriate time to visit the place is during the onset of winters as the summers of Bundelkhand are too hot to handle for some, otherwise it can be visited any time of the year. The river Betwa dries up in the summers but has sufficient amount of water for good bathing experience just after the summer monsoon. A traveller planning for a visit to Orchha must carry light cotton clothes, shades, hat, umbrella etc(summers) and accordingly for winters and a camera to click great pictures Raja Mahala. Jahangir Mahal, Oontkhana, Ramraja Temple, Chaturbhuj Temple etc.
