Jain Temples Overview

Ranked 7 of 52 sightseeing in Jaisalmer

The Jain Temples are one of the oldest temples in Jaisalmer, which are situated inside the Jaisalmer Fort complex. These temples have archaeological and religious significance attached to them. The group of temples in the fort were built between 12th and 15th centuries. These Jain Temples are dedicated to different Jain Tirthankars.

The temples are dedicated to Shambhavdevji and Rikhabdevji, who were famous Jain Tirthankars. All these temples are famous for their Dilwara style paintings and architecture.

There are beautiful animal and human figures on the walls of these temples. These temples are situated in the same complex as the Astapadhi Temples, which have a similar architecture and construction.

This complex also has a Gyan Bhandar Library which is the best place to get rare manuscripts in India. Travellers can take a rickshaw or shared auto rickshaw inside the fort for visiting these temples.

The Jain Temple

There are certain Jain temples in the Desert area. But according to the locals the temple inside the Jaisalmer Fort is very ancient and was built by the king Causal Singh himself. In order to protect the Jainism and the temple King Causal Singh built this inside the Jaisalmer fort. The Jain community was quite insecure from the Maugham invaders, so the place inside fort was quite safe for the temple.

Jain Temple with Carving of Hindu Gods

Nice carving in yellow stones, the arches, the ceilings are intricately carved in yellowstone. Some thing that strikes is the carving of Hindu gods like Krishna, Shiva, Ganesh, Kalbhairav & many more are present all over the temple.

Superb Architecture

The Jain temples in Jaisalmer are an example of superb stone carving work and you can spend hours admiring them. The temple is also an oasis of peace and you can pray in solitude. The priest is also good and explains to you the various objects in the temple. It has exhibits depicting all the 24 tirthankaras of Jain Gurus.

Marvel par excellence

What a marvel of carving, that to centuries ago. The Jain temples inside the Jaisalmer Fort, are a treat to watch. Right from the entrance, you see the galleries carved in such a design, that you keep admiring and appreciating the hard work done by the artisans. The roof tops are wonderfully carved, with the pictures of Shiva Ganesha and all other deities. The galleries have beautifully carved pillars, and the main temple is a sight to watch. A must visit.

Poetry in Stone

The Jain Temple Complex within the Jaisalmer Fort is simply poetry in stone. The exquisite carvings on the walls, pillars and the decorative torans are a revelation of the era gone by. Visit in the morning and experience the play of light within its inner walls. Walk slow, observe the high ceilings and the attention to detail and you sure will record memories of a life time.
