Golden fort

One of the most popular tourist attraction in Jaisalmer made of yellow stone found abundantly in Jaisalmer which glow like gold in sunshine. Though there was not much to see and also not much of extravagant life of royals to display, Visit to the fort was a different experience as compared to other forts in Rajasthan like Bikaner, Jodhpur, Jaipur etc. It was mainly because of the architecture. We had a guide but if you want to good time and really wants to see the things it better to go without guides as they makes things in hurry. Fort also offers a great view of the city. There are many shops inside for shopping but found it more of a trap.

Jaisalmer Fort

Standing tall overlooking the city of Jaisalmer this is a must see. Made of yellow sandstone, this fort is on a hilltop and offers great views of the city. Many families live within the fort and hence its known as a living fort'.

Jaisalamer fort

The famed Jaisalmer Fort was built in the year 1156 AD by the Bhati Rajput ruler named Rowel Causal who conspired with Sultan of Gaur to dethrone his nephew Bhojdev. The fort has served as a backdrop for several battles and wars. The Rang Burj was added to the fort as a fortified defence structure by Maharajah Jetasi in 1276 AD after the two Muslim invasions by Sultan of Delhi and the fort was surrounded by his army. Sultan's army was able to breach and capture the fort after eight long years. Bhati's were able to rescue the fort after much of it was destroyed by the Maugham army.

Mighty and living fort

Jaisalmer's unique fort is a living urban centre, with 3000 people residing within its walls. It's honeycombed with the narrow, winding lanes, lined with houses and temoles along with a large bumber number of handicraft shops, guesthouses and restrorents. You enter the fort from the east, near gopa chowk, and pass through four massive gates on the zigzagging route to the upper part.

Royalty visited

This is an excellent fort. You will need at least 2 hours to go through all sections of the fort. Better to hire a local guide for this. Inside the fort, there is a small township, people live there. There are a lot of shops selling local merchandise. Better not to buy any items from the fort. You can try in the local bazaar.

Worth a visit

Different from most forts as there is a whole township inside. However very dirty & a tourist trap. Lot of cows moving around. The Jain Temples inside are a must see.

The Jaisalmer Fort

The Jaisalmer Fort was built by the King of Jaisalmer (Causal Singh) in 1156 AD. The king has built this fort and offered all the citizen of province to stay inside. As the area of desert has neither water or other resources to live, the king established this township in order to provide all such living needs and generate revenues as well. The fort very large and still the residents are staying inside. The tour of fort takes 3 4 hours to complete. Inside the fort you can find hotels, hostels, restaurants, flee markets, temples and many things. The aerial view of the city Jaisalmer is panoramic.
