Jakhoo Hill Overview

Ranked 12 of 40 sightseeing in Shimla

Jakhoo Hill, is located at a distance of 1 kilometre from the Ridge, and is at a height of 8,000 feet above sea level. The highest peak of Shimla provides a beautiful view of the city with sunrise, sunset, the valleys of evergreens and snow-covered Himalayan ranges. Jakhoo Hill also has an ancient Hanuman temple.

According to legend, the shrine is believed to exist since the times of Ramayana. The temple is a century old spiritual edifice that attracts devotees as well as trekkers and mountaineers.

The word 'Jakhoo' is derived from 'Yakhsa', a link between humans and gods as per Hindu Mythology. The character is believed to be a protector of the divine treasure. The way to the temple is a narrow pavement that needs walking sticks to climb from the base.

The holy temple is home to innumerable monkeys. Perched on a hill top, it takes a trek of 30 minutes from The State Library through the dense pine forests to reach it. Ponies can also be hired from the base for a to and fro journey.

I think it is a best tourist place that I want2 go

Jakhoo Hills is the highest point in Shimla. The summit of Jakhoo Hill Shimla is 2, 455m and approximately 200m higher than the central ridge of Shimla. In Hindi mythology the flat summit of Jakhoo Hill Shimla was caused by lord Hanuman's sudden arrival while hunting for a special herb to save a Lakshmana priest during the battle of Ramayana.

Last minute trip

Made up a plan at last moment when I had visited Chandigarh for some business purpose.Reached Shimla at 3 AM with no advance booking done in any of the hotel, spent remaining part of the night sipping tea at city bus stand. It was wonderful to feel the freshness in air and see rising sun from the majestic Himalayas.Though it was a memorable experience but advise to travelers is plan your trip in advance. Well planned trip avoid hassles and discomfort in both journey and stay.Holiday IQ is the best site to help plan journeys.

Best for sunset

Very good place for those who like hills, greens, temple. It is better to go there by evening to see the sunset and night lights of Shimla, if ready to wait for some time. Just like everywhere in Himachal Pradesh the road is very difficult to drive. It is better to have professional driver from Shimla to drive.

Lot of monkeys here, be careful

Being highest point of Shimla city. It is holy place to visit. You can see very high statue of Lord Hanuman and some nice views from here. But most important aspect of the place is to be beware of the monkeys here. You should not have any eatables in your hands while visiting here. If possible have a stick with you, but don't threaten them Unnecessarily.
