Juma Masjid Overview

Ranked 7 of 681 sightseeing in Ahmedabad

Juma Masjid, located towards the eastern side of Teen Darwaza, is one of the most sacred mosques in Ahmedabad. It was built in 1423 A.D. by Sultan Ahmed Shah, who is known to be the founder of the city. Mosque has been constructed using yellow sandstone, which reflects the amalgamation of Hindu and Islamic styles in the architecture. The mosque consists of 15 domes that are supported by 260 pillars.

Originally, Juma Masjid was known as the Masjid-i-Jahanuma, which means a mosque that commands the view of the world. Tourists visiting this mosque can see a cupboard near the northern gate. This cupboard contains some of the relics of Muhammad like Koran written on deerskin, a red beard-hair of the prophet, his sandals and footprint embedded in a marble slab.

Towards the eastern entrance of the mosque, mausoleum of Sultan Ahmed Shah can be seen. Graveyard of three rulers, namely; Ahmed Shah I, his son, Mohammed Shah and his grandson, Qutub-Ud-Din Ahmed Shah II, can be found in this mausoleum. Constructed by Mohammad Shah II as a tribute to his father, this mausoleum is popularly known as Roja.

Excellent example of Indo-Islamic architecture

Recommended highly for students of architecture. There are no fees to visit. It is good if you have a guide, especially one who is aware of the historic and architectural significance of this monument. There are no touts and no touristy shops selling any memorabilia. There is no pressure to buy anything. Quite peaceful. Only condition is that footwear is to be removed. Women are also permitted to enter the mosque.

Enjoyed peace in the silence

There are two Juma Masjid at Ahmedabad. One is old, at Ellisbridge and second is new, at Teen Darwaja. When we visited, we got the best experience there. We enjoyed the peace in the silence.

Heritage walk, so refreshing

If you are really interested in history and heritage of Ahmadabad I would recommend you to go for heritage walks. These walks are scheduled either early in the mornings or at mid-night. They might sounds boring but are really fun and very educating as well. In these walks they take you around old Ahmadabad, show you the pleasant houses where the huge Gujarati families used to stay together. They also take you to a chowk where you would find four different types of architecture at one place. During our walk they stopped us in front of a house where the owner of the house himself distributed refreshments to the whole gang. This man distributes refreshments every day on his own expense, to every person who comes for these walks, without asking for anything in return. Juma Masjid is the last stop of these walks. This place is huge. There are around 1000 pillars which supports the structure. This place is truly a marvel of Muslim architecture. We visited this place in the morning therefore we just clicked some really good pictures and came back. Someday I would really like to attend a Namaz at this place.
