A peep into history

The Junagarh fort built in the 16th century stands in the middle of the city. One can drive till inside the fort from Suraj Pol. There is ample parking space inside. The buildings inside the fort are well preserved, though only some of the portions are open for public viewing. The portions closed to public seemed to be in need of maintenance. A good place to visit for one interested in Rajasthani architecture and history.

Junagarh fort is also known as Bikaner fort, situated in center of the town. Fort is well maintained, that is why many films have been filmed here. The architecture, art, artillery, costumes, documents and many other stuff from the history can be experienced here. A good view point

Outside campus beautiful. Good view from the fort. Museum near fort Worth watching.Inside the fort too good artifacts... Entry timings need to be 9 am instead of 10 am.. Overall a well maintained fort. There are guides who take you in groups if there are many people.. Though not required...

A cultural architectural amalgamation

Junagadh fort, made of Dulmera (red sandstone) and marble (including Italian Carrara), was originally called Chintamani and is one of the few forts that is not on a hill. It was built in the 16th century (1589-93) by the sixth ruler of Bikaner, Raja Rai Singh. The rulers thereafter, kept adding or beautifying the fort as per their taste making it a cultural architectural amalgamation of Rajput, Gujrati, Maugham & British styles. In fact, the fort is the result of contribution / influence of 16 successive generations of the rulers of Bikaner.Palaces within the fort complex are Karan Mahal, Phool Mahal, Anup Mahal, Gaj Mandir, Baadal Mahal, Darbar Hall, Dungar Niwas, Vikram Vilas. The fort is beautiful and a delight for people who love history, architecture and intricate carvings be it gold vermilion varnished work, use of mirrors, meenakari on mirrors, mosaic of colored glasses, elaborate carpet made in Bikaner jail, niches and panels, marble tiled floor, lattice windows and balconies, beautiful doors and much more.
