Heavenly is one word that would aptly describe our overall experience. If you\'re looking for a place to unwind, experience nature up close and get away from it all, this is the place for you. The locale is perfect, the room & facilities fit the locale perfectly and the food is great. If you like, there\'s a lot you could do, from trekking to Jungle Safaris to elephant safaris from nearby Bandipur. There\'s also the added attraction of driving up the nearby ghat road that leads to Ooty, 36 hairpin curves in 8 kilometers. (I however recommend that you actually avoid Ooty itself) If you\'d rather vegetate, then this place fits the bill as well. As always, sighting wildlife is purely a matter of luck of the draw. We didn\'t spot anything other than deer (chital), a snake and a wild boar, other than the common monkeys and langurs. Other guests were luckier, with one group spotting a leopard. Yeah sure, there was talk of someone spotting a tiger hunting gaur on an earlier trip, but it did sound a little like a tall, nilgiris tale. Our kids loved the ambience and playing with the resort dogs, watching sheep, cattle and the resident geese & pigeons. No TV, no cell phone coverage (at least not with our GSM provider) and the largely unspoilt surroundings outside the resort area are a plus.
Even a short stay at Jungle Hut is like being back among dear, dear friends. The welcome, the warmth, the charm of this hoary old property and the fact that you see more wildlife a few yards from your cottages than you will see in the Madumalai sanctuary, all make this a truly precious holiday or destination. The 'sanctuary' that is Jungle Hut, is unabashedly homely and not about winning a place in a glossy architecture magazine. With almost two decades of vintage to boast of, it wears it's age with Alan. The cottages are simply put-together, yet, very spacious and each have their own sit-outs. Perfect for watching the 40 -50 odd spotted deer, which seem to come and go as they please into the property. The Main bungalow and it's cute little annexes houses the Bar, the dining areas, the office and indoor games area and overlooks the bonfire pit that is lit every evening. There is also a rustic pool area with a few lounge decks and the shade of some gorgeous old trees. In fact, thanks to all the fantastic tree cover, the entire property is good 3 or 4 degrees cooler than old Masinagudi town. The meals here exemplify good home style cooking, with some of the dishes getting a third generation retelling. A quant selection of home-made jams made from local fruit that is put out at B'fast time and some truly unusual pickles went down very well with our brood. The Madumalai sanctuary and Theppekadu town in particular is over- run by day-trippers from Sultan Bathery, Calicut and Mettupalayam and is noisy and absolute hell on the wildlife. Most of them insist on listening to loud and tinny music from their cell-phones even on the van safari organized by the Forest dept. So that pretty much kills any chances of sighting anything more than some disinterred cattle. So Sidda, the can-fix-it man on Jungle Hut is best hope of some truly memorable wild encounters. The early morning hike up to the Murugan temple and the subsequent jungle walk clearly proved that the jungle-zens of Madumalai have a far more exciting night life than us Bangaloreans! There was evidence of a 1000m pachyderm steeplechase race through some bamboo groves and young teak plantations, remnants of a big cat buffet up beyond Theppekadu on the road to Ooty and any number of upturned trash cans to prove that the bears had catcalling. But above all, come to Jungle Hut to enjoy what is soon going to become a distant memory. A recent Supreme Court directive on removing resorts and hotels in the Madumalai Tiger Reserve areas buffer zone means most resorts and accommodation in the Masinagudi and Bokkapuram areas face closure. Which unfortunately means that even a property as committed to wild life conservation and a pioneer of sorts in these parts, Jungle Hut, will have to close its doors to its fourth generation of guests! In the mean time, those of us who remember Jungle Hut from the old days and Mrs. Mathias's hospitality, will be more than looked after by Pooja, Anusri and little Ila. We missed resident celebrity and owner, two times Indian Rallying Championships winner, Vikram Mathias, who was in Bangalore to get his dose of noise and smoke pollution.
Our 2 days stay at Jungle Hut was definitely the highlight of our last Ooty trip! We planned a trip to Masinagudi as the place promises sighting of incredible wildlife and birds and Jungle Hut absolutely lives up to the expectations from this place Life at Jungle Hut is calm & tranquil; living in the midst of unruffled nature. Deer freely walk around the whole property; we woke up our very first morning to find a big herd of them right outside our room. If you are a bird-watcher this place is your paradise. Jungle Hut organized two bird watching trails for us, one into the Jungle and one over a hill. We spotted many species including the paradise flycatcher, spotted owlets, long tailed shriek, purple sun-bird etc. They also organized a jungle safari at the Bandipur forest and an evening road safari which was great fun! We also saw a Giant Malabar Squirrel on the property; it's made its home there They have beautiful, big rooms to stay in, a very nice dining area and a comfortable lounge area with a bar. The pool area is gorgeous, with the pool facing directly the jungle and hills behind The food is fingerling good! They serve the local preparations along with some continental varieties. We had wholesome, hearty and super tasty meals right from breakfast to dinner Their hospitality is amazing; they make sure you feel at home the moment you enter. We left with really cool Jungle Hut that we bought from the reception. Will go back to Masinagudi just to visit Jungle Hut.
The idea to go to such a place like Masinagudi was to flee from the stress of day to day life and relax for sometime. Specifically we were lucky since the locality had some rainfall during the 3-4 days we were there; hence the weather was very salubrious. The green forest & the calm hills around gave us a lot of peace & rest. Since this was our first visit, we had a mild fear of being in the jungle though we were sure that nothing would go wrong. But then again that was a new kind of feeling that you don’t get in any common holiday spots. I could also feel my son 2 1/2 years enjoying this new environment, more so because he had lot of space to run around and shout at the top of his voice without being controlled. We of course felt bad that we couldn\'t do trekking / swimming or the night safari due to the rain but that was compensated by the pleasant weather and the greenery that we enjoyed. In total we achieved our target. The drive between Mysore and Masinagudi was also a good experience since it runs into the dense forest. Except for a few Kilometers near Gundulpet where the road was bad, rest of the road was good. We managed to spot a few animals en-route like the Peacock, Peahen, The Sambhur, A Giant Squirrel, Wild Boar, the White Langurs and needless to mention the Common Langurs, lots of Spotted Deer, and about 7 – 8 Elephants out of which 2 were calves. Gerald our driver a talkative young guy spoke a lot about the forest and the animals. He had some stories about tigers becoming man-eaters and the concept of animal territories within the forest. At the resort we also spotted small colourful birds really can’t name any of them. We stayed in Jungle Hut for two nights, and then in Forest Hills for a night. We also visited Ooty for a day and returned by evening. Overall experience was very good. One of my typical holidays.
