Kalighat Temple Overview

Ranked 2 of 8 sightseeing in Alipore

Kalighat temple is presided over by Goddess Kali and it is renowned as one of the 51 Shakti Peethams of India. It is believed that when Lord Shiva was dancing with the dead body of Sati, Lord Vishnu sliced off the body into various parts. Kalighat is said to be the location where Sati’s right foot’s toe dropped. This temple is always overcrowded with devotees, but the months of Paush, Chaitra and Bhadra see the numbers multiplying. This temple was originally a small hut, constructed by King Manasingha in the 16th century. This was rebuilt by Sabarna Roy Chowdhury in 1809.

This is the seat of the Shakti cultists, where the Goddess is seen as idol in black stone and adorned in gold and silver ornaments. Lord Shiva’s idol is also in silver. The most important day for the temple is the snan-yatra day, the yearly ceremonial bath day of Goddess Kali. At Kali Puja or Navaratri, tourists can enjoy the festivals among crackers, lights and colourful processions. The terracotta art is another highlight of this temple.

Total mismanagement

The area around the temple is congested. It felt like Cleanliness was amongst the last priorities for the temple management . The place where they make goat sacrifices is near exit of the temple and not meant for people with weak heart. In the exit path also there were blood stains which were never cleaned . Me & my brother also lost our new shoes which we had kept with a shopkeeper based on the words of the priest who was doing our puja . And on top of all that, the CM lives nearby, still there is no improvement in sight.

Kali Ghat Temple

Kaali temple in Kolkata, famous for its shrine. Beautiful Deity with superb eyes. But beware of pandaas, they force you to pay 500 bucks to get blessings from Kaali. Which is not good for the Temple's fame part. This temple is the place of Spirituality, here pandas should not demand money, it is like begging inside the temple.
