Kanakakkunnu Palace Overview

Ranked 19 of 39 sightseeing in Trivandrum(Thiruvananthapuram)

The Kanakakunnu Palace, situated near the Napier Museum in Thiruvananthapuram, was constructed during the reign of King Sree Moolam Thirunal. Chithira Tirunal, one of the most famous rulers of Travancore, modified the palace and constructed tennis courts in the premises. Used once as a summer retreat, this architectural marvel was used by the Travancore royal family to entertain their guests.

A major renovation project taken up by the State Government of Kerala has helped to restore the Kanakakunnu Palace. Under the control of the state's tourism department, the palace and its grounds have become popular venues for cultural meets, programmes and family outings.

The Nisagandhi Open-Air Auditorium, within the Kanakakunnu Palace compound, is one of the most sought-after venues for conducting stage shows. A week long festival of Indian classical dances is organised here annually. Leading artists of Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kathak, Odissi, Modern Ballet and other folk dances participate in this dance festival.

The Sooryakanthi Auditorium is also a popular venue for conducting exhibitions, trade fairs and cultural programmes. Apart from that, a week long international food festival is held at the Kanakakunnu Palace grounds in which renowned hotels from across Kerala take part.

The Kanakakunnu Palace being a storehouse of the history and culture of its region, the Indian National Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has documented the palace as a heritage monument.

Luxury of open space.

The main thing to be noticed here is the acres of land it covers. Right in the heart of Trivandrum city, it is a breathing space with good park area and wonderful trees. You may relax here in the shelter of some medicinally important trees. The park is the best attraction than the Palace.

Worth to visit

It is on small hillock and has an open air theatre and hosts concerts and dance programmes. The garden surrounding it is beautiful and well maintained. The Kanakakunnu Palace is a beautiful architectural specimen which belonged to the Maharajahs of Travancore. Situated on a small hill near the Museum and Zoo complex it has lovely gardens. No one stays in this palace. It appears it had been taken over by the Kerala government from the Maharajahs of Travancore sometime after India's independence. For going to the palace one has to walk up a driveway which leads right to the main entrance of the palace. A few cars only are allowed to be parked here. Its a nice landmark in the heart of Trivandrum. Many events including govt sponsored ones are conducted here. Most of the events have games and all. Kids and even the grown ups can enjoy all the rides and games. Inside the palace there are dance, kathakali performances, photography exhibitions, etc many times an year. Its a wonderful place for photography too. Definitely a should visit place.
