Legendary Karni Mata Temple

This is one of the peculiar temple one will ever encounter throughout India. Karni Mata temple is on the outskirts of Bikaner in small town called Deshnoke. Temple is known for its rats. Yes Rats! Temple is filled with friendly mice. One can find them all over the place. Trust me, at first one can't help but get uneasy. If you manage to spot a white rat then consider yourself fortunate, as it is a good luck charm. Other than that, temple has some majestic interior. If you are in Bikaner, then you just cannot afford to miss this.

The temple of rats

The extraordinary KARNI MATA at deshnoke, 30 km south of Bikaner is one of india, s weirder attractions. Its resident mass of holy rodents is not for the squeamish, but most visitors to Bikaner brave the potential for inclining and put a half-day trip here on their itinerary. Frequent buses leave from Bikaner, s main bus stand.

Karni mata temple

The Karni Mata Temple, also popularly known as the Nari Mata Temple, is a highly popular tourist spot amongst devotees that is dedicated to Karni Mata, who is believed to be an incarnation of Maa Durga. She is supposed to have laid the foundation stones of two of the most famous forts in Rajputana, and numerous temples dedicated to her can be found all across the country. What is unique about this temple, however, is not its architecture or location, rather the fact that 25000 black rats live, and are worshipped, in the temple. In fact, the food that is eaten by them is considered to be holy and is later served as 'prasad'.

Deshnoke Karni Mata Mandir

Karni Mata Mandir (famous as Rat Temple) in Deshnoke is located at 30 km from Bikaner. When travelling to Bikaner a visit to this temple is by default. The temple is dedicated to Karni mata (real name Ridhubai) who is considered to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga. She was the goddess of Bikaner and Jodhpur kingdoms, blessing them with prosperity, peace and good health. The temple was built in the 15th century and saw its proper completion (as we see today) in the 20th century under the rule of General Maharaja Sir Ganga Singh of Bikaner. One can see the dominating influence of Mughal architecture in its making. The temple has a beautiful carved marble facade and the silver doors that depict tales from Karni mata's life.To know more about Maa Karni do not forget to visit the museum just opposite the mandir. The temple has thousands of rats known as kabhas and considered holy. The white rat amidst them is considered to be the holiest as folklore states it as reincarnation of Karni mata. Some interesting folklores are:1. Sighting of the white rat is considered to be a blessing / fruitful.2. If the rat eats your prasad or runs across your feet / climbs on you, it's considered to be a blessing.3. When a rat dies there is no foul smell at all.4. The place is plague free.5. If one accidentally kills a rat they need to replace it with a silver or gold rat of same size, shape, height, weight as the deceased one.

Temple of Rats

It's a normal temple with hell lot of Rats around you. You can visit once to see what is really happening over there. Else it will be very disgusting to find rats running on you. Though it's an experience for that matter...!!
