Keoladeo National Park Overview

Ranked 1 of 9 sightseeing in Bharatpur

Keoladeo National Park, also known as Keoladeo Ghana National Park, was created some 250 years ago by Maharaja Suraj Mal. Formerly the private duck shooting reserve of the Maharajas of Bharatpur, this site was established as a bird sanctuary on 13 March 1956 under the name of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. Later on 10 March 1982, the site was designated as a national park and was named Keoladeo Ghana National Park. It was in 1985 that this national park was accepted as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

A reserve forest, this national park is the property of the State of Rajasthan of the Indian Union. Keoladeo Ghana National Park is visited by more than 100,000 people on an annual basis. The national park currently features 50 species of fishes, 5 species of amphibians and 7 species of turtles.  The park is most famous for its avian fauna of 375 species of birds, including Cranes, Spoonbills, Herons, Pelicans and others.

Flora of the park includes trees (particularly kalam), shrubs, marshes   and hydrophytes along with 392 species of angiosperms. There are two main seasons to visit the park, monsoon   and winter   For the maintenance of its vegetation, lakes and marshes, the park is partly dependant on rainfall and partly on the water supply from Ajan Dam (0.5 km from the park).

Site of the Keoladeo National Park is hardly 2 km southeast of Bharatpur city, while Delhi and Jaipur are almost equidistant. From the main city, tourists can take a bus, an auto rickshaw or a cycle rickshaw to reach the site. At the main and the barrier, cycle rickshaw and tonga are available for tourists, to get around the park. Electric van of the park is also available for visiting the park, but on special request. Visitors can even request the local administration of the park to arrange the movie, 'Indian Birds of the Monsoon'.

Bharatpur national park

Bharatpur Wildlife Sanctuary or the Keoladeo Ghana National Park is open throughout the year; the best time to visit Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is from October till March for this is when the migratory birds from around the globe could be spotted here.

Unparallel experience of Birdwatching

Even if you don't know anything about Birds, pack yr bag, plan this trip.Don't forget to take school I-Card of yr children as this will save you some money. If you are a nature-lover keep the trip for 2 days,Do take a guide on day 1 but make it sure to clarify whats their tour-plan otherwise they will linger for long at one place wasting yr time and saving their energy.Do plan the trip in morning hours as with increasing heat and noise-level the birds and animals shy away from approachable place. With some basic idea explore on yr own on day 2 preferably on bicycle which you can hire there itself.Having some tit-bits and water is always advisable if you are with kids, though have decent facilities inside also.Get absorbed in the beauty of nature and remain bewildered with creation of nature.

Bird sanctuary

Excellent with the help of a rickshaw puller who acted like a trained guide and the most interesting part was photography by him with the help of telescope hired at a cost of Rs. 50. 00/per hour. I will suggest his name for any of my relatives of friends going to visit Bharatpur, he is Mr fool Singh Rickshaw No. 16

Paradise for Bird watcher

The park was very well maintained and all the artificial garbage was not there. Seems authorities were very active on cleaning of the park. We sighted many specis of the birds, including migratory birds. Snake bird was a real beauty to watch. We alsi sign ted kingfisher multiple times and every time we were impresses by its colours. The crowd was very bad, prime reason might be less entry fee. Seemed it is a timepass place for locals.

Spectacular

I visited the keoladeo national park because I had heard so much about it. I entered the park around 12 pm and spent the entire day until sunset there. There are may species of birds, deer etc. You can take a cycle rickshaw as a guide or if you wish you can walk. This is a man made swamp land. If you are a photographer who can take some amazing photograph of the avian species, There is a sunset point where you can get some spectacular photographs.

Paradise for Bird Watchers

It's a great place for Bird watchers. Best time to go is early morning and late evening, also because lot of tourist come during day time and most have no knowledge about the decorum to be maintained in the park also their primary object is the boat ride. Bird watchers please check on birds in the trees as you enter and you will be surprised to see vast species of birds apart from the water bodies birds. Beautiful sanctuary and very well maintained.

Heaven on earth

Effortless birding, very peaceful place and photographers delight. We stayed 4 days and spotted more than 100 birds. Entire area is more than 35 kms out of which 11 km is wetland, Bharatpur is home to 375 species of birds and flora fauna here is incomparable. Home to many animals like Antelope, deer, fox, wild cat, porcupine. Cycle rickshaws drivers themselves are guide and inform tourist about all these details. They make every effort to show tourist birds. View from tower watch is amazing and evening sunset is magical.

A Bird watching Paradise

Irrespective of season, whether winter or summer, Keoladeo Ghana National Park will not allow to loose your wild spirit. Summer is the best season to watch the richness of wild life of Bharatpur along with the resident birds, which we counted around 76 species during our visit. We were also lucky to spot numerous pack of jackals, lot of spotted deer and sambhar along with nilgai, monitor lizard, numerous monkeys and wild boar. A true heaven for the lovers of birds and wildlife.

Birds paradise, less eatables found

Better stay at Ashok inside bird sanctuary as it will give you a feel of nature & if you have a desire to see birds then it is excellent to stay at Ashok. If are staying at Ashok then you have a facility to purchase your visitor tickets from a check post near to hotel. Take tanga(horse carriage) instead of rickshaw if you get as they have only two. Carry your snacks & water as only one canteen is there at the very end of your tour & you will get tea & some local brands of chips & namkeens. Also glass bottle, cold drinks is available but you won't find then chilled.
