Krishnabai Temple Overview

Ranked 3 of 57 sightseeing in Mahabaleshwar

The origins of rivers have always been considered sacred for their ability to give life to every being around and along the paths the rivers take. One of the lesser-known temples, Krishnabai Temple, is considered to be the origin of Krishna River. Overshadowed by the famous Panchganga temple, which is meeting point of 5 rivers Koyna, Krishna, Venna, Savitri and Gayatri, the nearby Krishnabai temple takes a bit of walking off-track to arrive at. The well-maintained temple of beautiful architecture resting among the woods has not tasted the wrath of urbanisation.

Even though the temple is open all around the year, monsoon season is deemed the best time to visit this temple as lush green surroundings and moss on the temple makes the entire area photogenic. To reach this place, one must take a small well-marked trail from Panchaganga temple, going through the woods, which leads you to the sacred spot which has water flow all around the year. Little will one realise as they walk through woods that they have reached the hilltop overlooking the Krishna Valley.

A small stream of water from a gomukh (cow-face) flows into a water tank which further joins other water sources to form a full-fledged river. The temple is also known for its stone carvings and the architecturally-acclaimed ceiling. Krishnabai Temple houses Lord Shiva and provides a marvellous view of River Krishna from a good vantage point.

Krishna river valley view

It is Krishna Devi temple. Krishna Devi is the river. The temple has a Shiva Linga. It is wet and cold. We know it is not washed water. It is natural water that is the origin of river Krishna. There was a self-styled guide who told these details. It is more than 3000 years old temple still standing tall. The view from there is fantastic - one should not miss it. It is just 5 minutes walk in mud road from Mahabaleshwar temple parking lot. No steps at all.

Great place to visit in Monsoon

Krishna River Temple is located in Mahabaleshwar district of Maharashtra. This temple marks the origination of Krishna river and dates back to 3000 years history. Only ruins of the temple are left that fascinates the imagination of history lovers. The entire place surrounds the gush sound of various small water outlets coming together to form the beginning of the holy river Krishna. Temple adorns Lord Shiva idol which is also very old. One can touch the water and surrender to its purity of this place. It dates back to 3000 years. The scenic beauty in front of the temple facing the mountains and vast river itself conjures the presence of Lord Shiva.Great place to visit in Monsoon. Please visit for a lifetime experience.

A place that takes your breath away

This temple is at the backside of the Shri Kshetra Mahabaleshwar mandir. Near the parking lot there is small mud road going from an end of the tea stall exactly in the front of the entry. This route takes you to the temple. The route was lined with lots tree which makes it look mystical as if you are traversing through some dense forest. There was hardly anyone who knew about this temple so there was no crowd. The temple was so nicely located; there is a valley view in front of the temple which was completely filled with fog. The temple architecture is simple and very attractive; it felt like it was magnetic pulling us towards it. It was just an awesome experience to be there. You can just sit there in the courtyard for hours waiting to get bored. But I don't think it will cease to mesmerize you ever. It was so calm and beautiful that I didn't wanted to move from there. It was raining badly that day. So we couldn't spend much time there. We were hardly there for few minutes probably. Even the idol is unique it is mixed version of the Bahubali Shivlinga and the normal shivlinga on top of it. Actually due to less light we could not see the idol properly but the caretaker gave a short guided demo of the idol explaining the architecture with his torch. I just loved the surrounding probably rain made it more appealing.

Historic place

This is also an old temple. The carving in the stones of the columns & the ceiling is attractive. You can also see the grand view of Krishna Valley from the temple.

Heritage temple and fantastic view

The temple has no 'puja' or architecture. But the origin of river Krishna starts there. The pond is filled from water flowing through an animal like structure. That structure has a water tube from anus to mouth! It is just a minute walk from the Shiva temple. Definitely worth visiting. The view from there is fantastic. I did not feel like coming back from that point.
