Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatheshwara Temple Overview

Ranked 1 of 41 sightseeing in Mangalore

Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatheshwara Temple, built by Sri Narayana Guru, the saint and social reformer from Kerala, dates from 1912. Only temple in Karnataka built by Sri Narayana Guru, it was meant for the worship by Billava community, who were prohibited from entering other temples. Main deity of the temple is Gokarnanatheshwara, a form of Lord Shiva.

Smaller temples for the Navagraha, Annapoorneswari, Mahaganapathi, Subramanya, Shaneeshwara and Anandabhairava surround the main temple. Four gopuras, pillars constructed in the Tamil Nadu style, are adorned with murals, showing a variety of scenes from legends, mythology and epics of different gods and goddesses. Navrathri and Shivaratri are celebrated with fervour at the temple.

Built by a devotee, called H. Koragappa in the year 1912, the temple was the realisation of the wish of Sri Narayana Guru to establish a temple for the Billavas. Name 'Kudre-valli' has been assigned to the land on which the temple is built, owing to the fact that it was earlier used by Tippu Sultan to graze his horses.

Shiva temple

If ever one wants to do a peaceful prayer to Lord Almighty without any hassle, this is the temple to visit. It has an excellent architecture, tall Gopuram and is very spacious inside and above all very clean and well maintained. The whole surroundings are motivating and would compel you to visit more often to gain peace.

Visit the Temple

Temple is good and the annadhanam was also good. There was no money involved except to use the lift to go up the gopuram and have a birds eye view of the place through a narrow window. Apart from a spiritual experience didn't find the place having other values. The beach was crowded, but car parking had a small fee that too was full when I visited. The place had a feel of modern touch didn't get any feel of an ancient temple.

Neat clean place of worship

Nice and clean place of worship, modern in concept but traditional in custom. Place looks. More like a bill board for Karnataka Congress with bigger self serving inaugural boards than even the dietys name.Who is who or have been in congress is advertised as this was the last public appearance by Rajiv Gandhi before he was assassinated.

Being with the Lord Gokarnath

Kudroli temple was located just 2. 5 km from my hotel Suman Residency. The main temple of Lord Gokarnath is situated at the centre. Inside the main temple there are other temples of Lord Ganesha, Lord Subrmanya, Lady Parwati and Lord Shani. Temple prohibit s photography. However we can purchase Lord's photos and other suviniors at the temple office along with the famous "Laddoo prasad". Outside the temple, there are other temples of Lord Hanuman, Sai Baba, Lord Krishna. There is a huge status of Lord Nandi just in front of Lord Gokarnath. A nice garden with Lord Shiva's statues and a miniature model of a wildlife scantury is present. I visited in the morning. But it is recommended to visit temple in the evening to view the beautiful lighting at this temple. Mangalore market at Hampankatta is just 5 mins from this temple. Temple has ample parking space. I liked the sandalwood paste that is to be applied to forehead while taking blessings. Photography is allowed outside temple. Remember not to use cameras within temple.

A grand temple.

This was temple built with guidance from Sri Narayanaguru in early 20th ., century. Its creed is equality for all irrespective of caste. Built on a sprawling area. It is worth seeing during Dasara. Statues showing the various manifestations of Mother goddess are displayed. A beautiful place to peacefully sit and relax. For a full description of the temple and its history one can go to Wikipedia.

Beautiful temple and nice architecture

I went to this temple during day time. They ask you to take off your shoes at the entrance of the temple. The temple has a pretty big premise. So you have to walk bare foot. Try not to go during day time, you will burn your foot, the floor gets really hot during day time. This temple has Hanuman temple, Sai Baba temple and Shiva temple in the same premises. You are not allowed to click photos inside the temple. I loved the architecture.

Must visit

The temple is beautiful and attracts people and the temple is clean and well maintained thanks to the committee for maintaining it such clean. One should visit the temple who visits Mangaluru and take blessings from Gokarnatheshwara. Preferably you can visit before sunset, so that you can see the temples both in sunlight and at the night.

Modern temple; a must visit in Mangalore

Most of the times famous temples are very old, 100+ years old (sometimes even 1000 years old in certain parts of India). So, visiting and recommending a 4-5 year old temple is something new for me. A large beautiful temple painted in golden colour that gives the look and feel of an ancient temple but is quite new.Near the city, this temple has a sprawling campus with separate sections for various deities. Main deity is Lord Shiva which is clearly reflected in the name of the temple. But sections of Lord Ganesha, Sai Baba and Lord Hanuman are excellent. For each deity if anyone wants to perform Pooja, respective prices are mentioned. One thing that clearly strikes while visiting this temple is cleanliness. Agreed, that the temple is pretty new (I am not very sure of its history, so won't comment) but still maintaining that campus is not easy.Great temple to worship, have some quiet time and admire the beautiful sculpture on the walls.
