Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is home to different species of birds, including migratory birds from Siberia. This sanctuary is spread across 14 acres and was established by the Government of India for preserving coconut trees and mandrakes, which are the natural habitat of birds.

Not a bad option for bird and photography enthusiasts

Being a bird photography enthusiast I was quite excited to visit the bird sanctuary and asked my driver to arrive at 6. 15 am in the morning. We were in by around 6. 30 and were among only 5-6 people inside at that early hour.It was a forest like setting as the vegetation was quite dense. As a result, we could hear a lot more than we could see. We were informed, there are some watch towers towards the end of the pathway and will allow for better viewing of birds from the height.Almost a 1. 5-2 km walk led us to the watch towers which did allow for some bird viewing but no more than 3-4 types of birds. On the way back though, we were solicited by a boatman asking us if we wanted to see the birds by boat. After some negotiation he agreed to take us for an hour in the waters for Rs. 400.It was a rowboat that swept through the waters silently without disturbing the birds, and we saw more than 5-6 species of birds during the boat ride and managed to get some pretty good photographs as well. The boat also took us past some nearby resorts to show us the view from outside. We even stopped by at the house of a local to sip on some hot tea.Frankly, the walk through the park was not very interesting and quite draining in the Kerala heat too. I would instead recommend the boat ride for calmer and better viewing of birds. However you need to ensure you are there in the morning hour as the bird viewing will keep dropping with the rising temperature during the day.

Peaceful, Close to Nature ..!

We stayed inside the Kumarakom Bird sanctuary I. E. Water Scmesmerisingapes (an extremely beautiful property) so we could listen to the early morning sound of the birds ... Though there is a separate entry to the main area of the Bird Sanctuary where in you should watch an introduction video to have a clear view of your visit ... There were migrants at the time of my visit .. My kid really enjoyed watching the birds, it was although a learning activity for her to know about beautiful birds, their names, their sound ... It is worth visiting if you are fond of Bird Sanctuary, else you would not find anything apart from a normal walk inside the forest.

Away from everything

This is definitely a nice place to hang out. You can get the feeling of being alone, very busy city life and still be safe at the same time. Best place to hangout if you wanna be alone and get your head sorted out.

Amazing Bird Sanctuary

It's a lovely place if you are a nature lover! On the way, one can see many different kinds of plants/ trees. Couldn't see any birds on the way but from Tower 2, the view was amazing, thousands of birds at one place.Advice : see the 10 minute documentary at the entrance to have a better idea about the sanctuary! As the towers are not marked, else one can miss the towers.

Just a place for evening visit

We visited the place with family. This place is beautiful with Vembanad lake nearby. There is a long pavement about 2 -3 km to walk. It is doubtful, you could any birds in evening time due to the noisy environment. If you are a nature lover and like to walk a lot, you can visit this place while coming to kumarakom. It is well maintained and clean. The view of lake at time of sunset is beautiful.

Not well maintained

This located in the heart of kumarakom near kavanattinkara and bank of vembanad lake. We have to walk little more inside to watch the birds. It is paradise of the birds. It is managed by KTDC now. If we are lucky, we can see many birds from African and siberian. Not well maintained for tourists.

A sanctuary with varieties of Birds and best to view in the early morning

We visited Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary during our visit to Kerala during April 2015. There are various varieties of birds. If you want to have the pictorial view of birds you have to come early morning from hotel. Birds can be seen only in early morning.

Bird Sanctuary without birds

Am not recommending this location to anyone. Not a good location. There is no birds at all. You have to search hard to find a bird. This area is such a waste of time. Don't go here.

Good place for bird watchers, photographers and environmental researchers

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a place for nature lovers. We can feel the calmness and beauty of nature by walking inside the sanctuary. During season there are plenty of birds can be spotted. It's a journey through the banks of backwater.Without Patience this trip will be a just walk, no plastic items are allowed inside sanctuary. There is pass for entry to sanctuary which cost rs 50. The sanctuary is almost a 2 hour walk so it's better to have some snacks with you. If you are a bird watcher or a photographer it is the worthy place for you. There are also a large variety of flora and fauna. Having a binocular is better for this trip.

Well walk your way up there

One needs to be fresh, get up early in the morning and walk it to the towers. It's a wonderful sight to behold, the numerous birds, the various colours and the greenery all over.
