Laitlum Canyons Overview

Ranked 12 of 43 sightseeing in Shillong
Laitlum Canyons is an upcoming tourist destination at Shillong in Meghalaya. This place is remarkable due to its natural environmental formation.
Perched at great heights, it is in fact the edge of a hill which is surrounded by green hills and valleys. The view of grassy plus rocky hills all around and tiny villages far below is really magnificent. Walking down to the valley via an uneven rocky path is rather easy; however the climb uphill is a bit tedious and there is only one shop in the vicinity which offers simple snacks.
Laitlum Canyons is not at all crowded and commercialized like other tourist places and is best suited for a secluded and peaceful break from the usual hustle bustle of city life. It is absolutely a paradise for trekkers and nature lovers.
Mawlynnong waterfalls, Mawjymbuin Caves, Elephant Falls, Mawphlang Sacred Forest and Wankhar Entomology Museum are some other interesting places in Shillong.
Travelers come here via Smit village which is 6 kilometers away. Local buses and taxis are available from Shillong to Smit. It is advisable to reach the place early during the day as the whole region will be enveloped by dense fog by noon.

Laitlum Canyon to Rasong Village

Me and the rest of my classmates decide that we would go for a trek down the laitlum Canyon to a village called Rasong Village. We caught a taxi in firebrigade Shillong to Smith for just 30 rupees and then from Smith again we caught another taxi for another 30 rupees to laitlum and we started our trek down . . The walk on the steps to Rasong is a very difficult task because in most parts it is not very well leveled with just mostly rocks piled up together. I suggest you decide to carry lots of water if you decide on going. Below we met a local and decided to pay him a small amount of 200 rupees to guide us to a nearby waterfall, which was a view and there were basic no tourist in this spot. Further ahead there was a higher waterfall we could see but it was too late for us to walk there so we headed back the leg sore of a walk up to Canyon. This is the hardest task of the day. Now my suggestions are that you take the number of a taxi driver if you didn't book a taxi for the trek so you can call them before reaching the top, also carry lots of water because you will feel dehydrated especially if you go during summer and lastly start as early as possible, you will be able to reach the higher waterfall which we couldn't if you start early . Thank you, I hope this review helped.

Hide and seek destination for clouds

An offbeat destination, but lately it gained popularity due to the shooting of Rock On 2! Amazingly beautiful location which looks like meadows in Europe. The clouds play hide and seek throughout the day. It has recently gained the popularity of a picnic spot among the residents of Meghalaya and Assam. They ask for a nominal fees for parking. Booking a car trip is the only option as public conveyance is not available regularly.

The Hills Talk to you

This is Laitlum village, a drive from Shillong city towards Smit and going towards the vilage is good one hour. One must experience the hug from the clouds and the simplicity of the villagers and ofcourse the serenity.

A Must Visit

Local people, drivers hardly know this place. Smit village is well known to them. This place is few km away from village & better known as Lai-tum. The place was quite shiny when we reached & was very peaceful but very soon cloud covered the entire place. We spent most of our time during the daylong visit sightseeing at Shillong. Driver charged us 1K extra for this place & it was his first time visit in his 10 year long driving career. But truly Laitlum is worth a visit & soon to be a major tourist spot in Shillong.

The offbeat beauty

Though it's a offbeat destination and hard to reach but it's one of the best places to visit once you are in Shillong. From June to October, it remains covered with thick fog so the best time to visit Laitlum is around Christmas. Sunny day would be the best to visit and admire the beauty of Laitlum Canyon. It's the best spot for a family outing or picnic.

It's a beautiful place, very quiet and very different

It's a beautiful place. Very quiet and very different. One of the the problems here is the fog. You have to wait until the fog resides, for a beautiful view of the valley. You can see a small village from the top. It's a 90-minute drive from Shillong.

A serene place with breathtaking view

Very few tourists visit this place. Even locals in Shillong are not aware of such a beautiful place. Taxi drivers ask locals on way to reach the spot. When you reach, it is magnificent view all around. I would say "don't miss it". Carry water and snacks with you. There are nothing you can get. The place is serene and tranquil and a must visit place for all nature lovers.
