Loktak Lake Overview

Ranked 1 of 40 sightseeing in Imphal

Loktak Lake is considered as one of the largest freshwater lakes of north-east India. This lake is also called the Floating Lake because of various heterogeneous bodies of vegetation, soil and organic matters, which can be found floating in different states of decomposition. The presence of such organic matter is also known as Phumdis, occupying about two third area of the lake.

The lake is spread over an area of 286 sq km and is located at a height of 768.5 m. Loktak Lake is mostly surrounded with shallow waters, which lead on to marsh or swamp lands. The water from this lake also serves as a source for irrigation, hydro power generation and drinking water.

The State Government in recent times has taken initiatives to develop this lake into a popular tourist spot.

Amazingly beautiful!

Destination is Sendra Look-out point. Have a first look from top. Both side of the lake & surrounding village will look like paintings! On the other side of the resort there is restaurant. Have your coffee or lunch. Now ride the launch separately on both side of the lake because scenario is different. Simply enjoy the boat ride to capture the beauty of sprawling fresh water lake!

A nice place to visit and stay

Loktak lake is a very large lake and important resource for hydroelectricity as well as vegetables. The beauty of the lake is its vastness and floating gardens. We loved to stay here in Sendra Park & Resort. The nearby Keibul Lamjao National Park is an important spot. Here the rare Sangai Deer is available. One can enjoy boating in the lake.
