Madhukeshwara Temple Overview

Ranked 1 of 7 sightseeing in Banavasi

Madhukeshwara Temple, constructed during the 9th century by the Kadamba Dynasty, is famous for its architectural designs and carvings. The temple has several monolithic stone works such as a stone couch and triloka mantapa depicting heaven, earth and the nether. The idols of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu can be seen in the temple.

The unique attraction of the temple is the half idol of Lord Ganesha, whose remaining half is believed to be in Varanasi. Within the temple is also located an idol of Lord Narasimha having a peaceful face. Moreover, the temple has a sculpture of five hooded Naga, which belongs to the 2nd   century.

This five-hooded Naga sculpture has an inscription in Prakrit (the old language). As per this inscription, it was installed by Princess Sivaskanda Nagashri following the construction of a Vihara and tank at the site. The temple is visited by devotees of Lord Shiva during Shivaratri.

Better time to go to this temple is Rathotsavam

It is the very ancient temple of about 5th century times. This temple can be reached through train and bus without any trouble in journey. History says that this Banavasi was the first Capital of the ancient Karnataka state, the sculpture of the temple shows the proof that it is very old one and the beautiful one. The better time to go to this temple is during Rathotsavam time or during two days Kadambotsava festival time. The river Varada will be flowing just few steps away to the temple which looks so good fromt the top of the temple. So I recommend every visitor to visit this temple. The temple is slightly modernized now and for better maintenance with reference to the heavy crowd during festival times.

Symbol of a culture and unparalleled craftsmanship

History: Madhukeshwara temple can be considered the beginning of an organised, civilised and well established culture of what we now call "Namma Nadu - Karunadu". The temple is the remnant of the first known capital of Karnataka region established by the Kadamba dynasty.Present:The temple located in the heart of the town of Banavasi, built in 10th century has seen subtle but clear changes over time by successive rulers. The intricacy and finesse in the architecture and craftsmanship is exemplary and most of it is well maintained to this day. The temple complex is fortified and the open areas have lawns and small plants all around the temple. The highlights are the huge Nandi Statue made of single rock at the entrance followed by a Linga in the garbhagriha. The name Madhukeshwara, as the priest described comes from colour of the Linga which is close to colour of honey (madhu). The pillars that hold the structure are finished smooth and ancient scriptures are engraved all around them. The environment inside the temple is calming.A good place to visit.A few pointers:1. Stay should be planned at Sirsi (23kms) as Banavasi is a very small town.2. Very few restaurant are present around the location and one can get only local cuisine. The taste though is good and worth trying.3. The Varada River near the temple is a good place to freshen up.
