Madurantakam Overview

Ranked 9 of 25 sightseeing in Kanchipuram

Madurantakam is a town in the Kanchipuram District of Tamil Nadu. It is famous for the Aeri Katha Ramar Koil, a 1300 years old temple, which is on the Villupuram-Chengalpet Highway, at a distance of 90 km from Chennai.

Located near the Agricultural Reservoir Bund, the temple is devoid of any kind of idol, statue or portrayal of Hanuman or Anjaneya but He is not separated from Lord Rama. It is believed that under the Bakula tree in the Rama Temple, wisdom was acquired by Sri Ramanujam after meeting one of his mentors known as Maha Purna (Peria Nambi).

An Artificial Lake

It is an artificial second largest Lake in Tamil Nadu, situated in Maduranthakam, Kanchi. It is believed to be built by the Chola King Uthama Chozha, also called as Maduranthakam, during his reign. It is also home to the Aeri Katha Ramar Temple. This place is considered to be holy as Ramanuja has visited, this lake supply the water for irrigation and Vedanthangal is nearby, the famous Bird Sanctuary. Canals, lakes and Gardens always have an appeal or resemblance of paradise, heart get cleanses. A great attraction even a picnic spot. A beautiful scene if passing through the SH45, leaves a great impression.
