Mahakal Temple Overview

Ranked 16 of 77 sightseeing in Darjeeling

The Mahakal temple atop the Observatory Hill is a most revered place for the locals and you will be surprised to find a Hindu priest sharing a common altar with a Buddhist monk.

The oldest site in Darjeeling is said to be the Observatory Hill, where a Buddhist Monastery called Dorje Ling, or 'place of the Thunderbolt' once stood. Darjeeling derives its name from this spot. In 1782, three siva-lingas representing Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar are said to have manifested themselves here. From then on, the Mahakala temple dedicated to Lord Shiva came into being and is today greatly venerated as devotees from all sections of the community go up for worship.

Prayers are chanted by a hindu priest while a Buddhist monk reads from the Buddhist Holy Scriptures. Devotees circumambulate the shrine three times, barefoot while ringing the bells that are placed around it. You will see hundreds of prayer flags hung all over the shrine and on trees, fluttering in the breeze. Watch out though for the mischievous monkeys that swarm around the hill side.

The holy site is popular with both Buddhist as well as Hindu worshippers. The whole scene is one of great peace and tranquility.

Maha Feeling

My last visit to Mahakal Temple, was on 26/12/2015. This time I was bit awestruck seeing the ambience of the temple. I have been to the place and loves going back every time I am in Darjeeling. But this time, my overall experience was so different from the past. The place looks to be fresh and new. Other than the holy aspect of the place, what I like most of Mahakal Mandir is its colour. This time I saw more colours, it felt that the Mandir is built recently and is decorated for any ceremony. I would suggest to recent viewers to positively visit the place and get the feel on Holiness.

Ancient temple, worth visiting

A nice clean temple off the Mall road. Very easy to reach specially for the elderly as everywhere else one has to climb a lot. Temple is clean and no pandas to bother you for collections etc. Ancient temple, worth visiting.

On the heights

It takes a great deal of strength to reach the temple but the struggle is worth it. With the view from the temple and the company of mischievous little monkeys make the experience a welcoming one. Beware of your belongings with those little imps lurking around you.

A small trek to the place of Mahadev

Not for them who does have a weak heart. It is a long trek up the spines of the hill just behind the Mall road. You would feel the loneliness while walking through the steep walkway to the top of the hill. At the top, Mahadev will welcome you to his place. Gongs of bells would fill peace in your heart. Have a worship and come back visiting Mahakal market.

Mahakal Temple - A very old and colorful temple

Mahakal temple is a mystic shiva temple. It has a unique 'pahari' touch to it. I had never seen a more colorful temple. The colorful traditional prayer flags makes the temple even more beautiful. One can also spot local birds like mynahs, parrots and others.
