Mahalaxmi Racecourse Overview

Ranked 35 of 769 sightseeing in Mumbai

Mahalaxmi Racecourse, a horse riding track in Mumbai, was built in 1883. Modelled on the Melbourne Racecourse, this racecourse sprawls across an area of 225 acres facing the sea. Royal Western India Turf Club has taken the racecourse on lease from the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. The race course is considered to be the biggest open ground in the Mumbai city.

On the racecourse is a grandstand, which has now been designated as a heritage structure. The oval-shaped race track at the racecourse extends to a length of 2400 m. Home to five Indian Classics, this racecourse hosts the Indian Derby on the first Sunday of February every year. Besides racing (November to April), the inner track of racecourse is used for yoga sessions by common man.

The racecourse is located just opposite the Mahalaxmi Station (West). Tourists can also board on trains to Mumbai Central station and take taxis or auto rickshaws from there on.

Good place for a Jog or a Run or to watch a Local Derby

The Race Course has really good facilities for taking a jog and a run, it is a 2. 4 km course, and normally can be used to play football & other games too . . During derby racing, it is normally shut for public, but is still quite crowded for people who come to watch horses run.
