Mansar Lake Overview

Ranked 6 of 25 sightseeing in Jammu

Mansar Lake is one of the popular attractions of Jammu, which is surrounded by forest covered hills. On the eastern bank of Mansar Lake, there is the Sheshnag Temple housing a figure of a snake with six heads. The water body is associated with a mythological legend, therefore is frequented by tourists and devotees alike.

Boating facilities are rendered at the site by the Tourism Department. Along with recreational facilities, the rich flora and fauna draws the attention of tourists. There is a cemented path around the water body along with decks for sighting birds, turtles and fish.

The wildlife sanctuary at the site provides shelter to spotted deer and neelgai along with water birds such as cranes and ducks. Tourists can also explore the traditional life style of Gujjar and Backarwal communities in the surrounding areas. These communities wear ethnic costumes and reside in open ‘kullhas’.

Umapati Mahadev, Narsimha and Durga Temple are some of the notable religious shrines in proximity of Mansar Lake. Mansar Lake can be reached by heading on National Highway 1A.

A perfect picnic spot

The Mansar Lake situated in Jammu is the best option for a family outing. If you are in a mood of spending some valuable time with kids and your relatives, it will be worth visiting. Apart from this, it is like a mini zoo, filled with many animals like the Deer, Turtles, different types of Fishes and other creatures. Roaming around the lake will take you about an hour. There is an opportunity for motorboat riding too. This costs 100 rupees per person for a specific duration of time. Also, you can find innumerable number of Fish in the lake. Activities like Fishing are strictly prohibited there as it is considered as a holy place too. After roaming around, you can have food brought from home or you can help yourself with the food stalls inside the lake. There is also a fort inside and one can have a good photo session in it. As I like adventure, I found it less interesting and would not like to suggest this place for those who want to explore and experience something new always. Otherwise, it is a one time type of thing.

Mansar Lake - Nice and silent place

We have been Shri Mata Vaishno Devi temple every year in 1st week of December regularly, but we have some other planning also at this last trip and because of Mr. Ajay Gupta owner of Gupta Dryfruits (Main Market, Katra) we blessed to saw the new place named Mansar Lake. It's very nice and silent place. Someone who likes silent and natural place must visit mansar lake at least once. It's been 70 KMS away from Jammu and the way through Mansar Lake from Jammu is also very fine. Mansar Lake is very big lake with the diameter of more than 4 KMS. It's located between mountain and there is one very historical temple of Shri Shesh Nag ji.

Fun at Mansar Lake

Mansar is a very attractive Lake in the midst of lusting greeneries surrounded by forest-covered hills. It is a very popular base of tourists. A temple for a Snake God, Sheshnag, is located on the banks of Lake. It is believed that it is auspicious for newly wed couples to seek blessings of Sheshnag by performing three parikrama around the Lake.
