Amazing

Straight out of a science fiction film. The meditation hall and the prayer room will take you to a different world. Beautiful experience. Register one day ahead.

Peaceful and Tranquil at its best

A tranquil experience. The Auroville Matrimandir is truly a marvel of modern architecture. A sphere that resembles a lotus which signifies peace and humility is the heart of the attraction. The inside is only meant for serious concentrators (not meditation) where people go to concentrate (something that I still am unable to understand ).We came across people from various countries, French, Japanese, Indian, Israelis etc. All living under one roof in peace and harmony. The food served, here while basic, was absolutely delicious and completely organic.A must visit if you ever planning on going to Pondicherry.

Peaceful- yes and Overrated - also yes

It is possible that this place just wasn't for me, but in my opinion, the experience does not live up to the hype around it.First of all, you have to plan a trip to Auroville for at least 2 days if you want to see the inside of the dome. I went during the off-season, so I got the pass for the next day itself. The office that hands out the passes is open for a very short time. You'll have to wait for a while and I've heard of people having to stand in long queues only to return without a pass. But as I said, On the first day, you can also check out the boutiques, bookstores, and restaurants in Auroville, but I found everything to be unreasonably expensive.A minibus takes visitors to and from the visitors centre to the dome. If you're only visiting, and not entering the dome, then you have to walk and view it from a distance. The next day, before entering the dome, we were given a talk about the place, its philosophy, etc. There was a lot of emphasis on "obedience" and the word "cult" kept playing in my mind. No disrespect intended, but that was the vibe I got.The inside of the dome is all white, pristine, and quieter than a library. In the centre is a crystal. You're given 15 minutes to meditate, which I think is way too short a time for this activity. You can book a slot for extending your session, the procedure for which is given on your pass.It was a whole other experience, but the whole cult-like vibe, and the fact that it didn't seem to accomplish a purpose left me underwhelmed. Also note: Kids below 10 are not allowed inside the dome.If you plan to stay longer, then check with the visitor's centre about volunteering activities.Mobile phones/handbags are to be handed over at the entrance before entering the dome.

The Auroville thing

People go to auroville with the main purpose of vising Matrimandir. This is a gold plated globe size temple in Auroville. Residents do organize various festivals around the year. There are some life inspiring elements inside the Golden globle. But unfortunately it doesn't open all the time. So if you go to inside the temple or want to know more about it, must contact at the center where passes are issued. You will find an amazing old banyan tree in the campus.
