Mawphlang Falls Overview

Ranked 45 of 43 sightseeing in Shillong

This calm, serene and magnificent waterfall nestled away in the thick green forests of Shillong is perhaps the most soul-cleansing experience you will have in your life! While the waterfall in itself does offer something unique, it is also the entire environment around it that creates the magic. The extremely clean and pristine state of the water also adds to its charm and makes it look like a place right out of your favourite fairy tale.

This waterfall is the kind of place where you can conveniently take your lunch basket, sit beside the falling water and gaze at nature in its purest form as you picnic. The waterfall is surrounded by thick and flourishing trees on all sides and it does feel like you’re sitting in the middle of a forest.

A number of locals who have been residing in the area for a few years worship a few of the ancient trees in the forest as they are believed to bring good luck. In fact, these forests are known as Mawhplang Sacred Forests by the local population. These forests also house myriad varieties of life forms and are a true treat to both mind and soul.

A shady forest

You will like this place if you like a walk in the woods, or if you are in a romantic mood. The history of the forest and its medicinal trees will also attract some, but this is not a place for the sedentary traveller.

Nature at its best!

Acred groves, indeed sacred. Wish many more forests were given this status to help save little more greenery.Boundless beauty! Truly breathtaking.
