Old paintings and architecture of different era

It is better to take a guide and see the temple. Guides are available as soon as you enter the temple from the southern entrance. They usually demand Rs. 400 - but will settle for Rs. 300. We got Mr. Fidel Castro as guide though the temple board reads non Hindus can not enter the sanctum. Th whole temple roof is gaudily painted - must be recent. But ancient vegetable painting of Meenakshi's wedding is there in a small hall inside the temple. . The guide showed the ancient 3500 years old structure, 2000 years old sculptures and 350 years old part of the temple. He made us appreciate each type of architecture. The pandas had fish as their symbol and they ruled Madurai for years. That is Meenakshi, (meen is fish and atshi is rule) he said. He showed the golden gopuram from the golden lotus pond. Only from one place, it can be seen. He showed the sculpture of a woman in labour. Devotees have tied a cloth over it and oiled it nicely with a faith, the goddess will grant safe delivery for them. It takes one hour to go around the temple with the guide. It might have taken another hour if we has to have the darshan of the goddess in special Rs. 100 ticketed queue. There is no entry from the western entrance. So we went to the southern entrance. Well tiled broad road without any traffic. Plenty of shops and eateries are there. At the entrance a shoe stand gives token. Then there is another Queue for handing over your Mobile and a third one to keep luggage, cigarette packs and lighter. If you have a car, it is better to leave all these in the car itself. After coming out again these 3 Queues to get back your stuff. They are all free - but time consuming. Though Vagai river was dry, there was water in the pond. The statue of Goddess Meenakshi is made out of Burma Emerald, they say. You can not appreciate that since green colour itself is faded. Mainly the attraction is architecture and then sculpture and paintings. The whole city of Madurai also is built around the temple.

Amazing architecture

We visited Meenakshi temple in the morning around 7 am. It is a big temple, easily takes 2-3 hrs. We visited on a weekday, not much rush. Very clean from inside. It is recommended to hire a guide to understand the various sections and history behind each artefact. It cost us Rs 300 for an hr. We took the special darshan tickets which is basically a fast track system, it cost us Rs 100 per adult. It is an amazing temple. Lots of single stone carvings. A must see.

Meenakshi Temple

Took a good amount of more than two hours to visit the full premises. Splendid Work of Art, beautiful intricate carvings neatly coloured. Huge premises with talk and gigantic Gopurams all around. Magnificent to look at all the work on the walls of the Temple. Darshan was good with not much rush.

Meenakshi Temple

It's one of the best temple in India. Temple architecture is outstanding. Museum inside is also worth to watch. After darshan near Ganesha idol take a look at ceiling paintings. From whichever angle we see Shivlinga, its pointing toward us. Amazing work.

Meenakshi temple

Famous for its Meenakshi Temple, Madurai is one of the oldest cities of India. The city is said to be constructed in the form of a lotus and thus known as Lotus City as well. Madurai is basically the place for those who cherish architecture or have great faith in Hindu religion. The place seems to have a sanctifying effect and the moment one steps in the city, a strange kind of peace starts to settle in him. Apart from Meenakshi Temple, one can also visit Thiruparankundram, which is one of the older temples dedicated to Lord Muruga(Karthikeya). Gandhi Museum is another place to see in Madurai. The museum houses Gandhis bloodstained dhoti and some other artifacts related to freedom struggle in India.

Wow .. What a temple architecture ... Amazing

Amazing temple architecture .. Can't believe how they build this temple in the 14th or 16 th century. Fully built by stones with curved architecture. For devites they can opt free darshan or paid darshan. Paid darshan will take 100 Rs. We can visit first sundaresan(shiva) and follows by meenakshi ( parvathi). Mobile will be allowed and power bank and camera they won't allow. In main temple non hindus are not allowed. Need minimum 3 hours to visit this temple see the beauty. Also depend upon the rush. In festival season huge rush may expect.
