Mehrangarh Fort Overview

Ranked 1 of 31 sightseeing in Jodhpur

Mehrangarh Fort, situated 125 m above the city, is enclosed by thick walls. One of the largest forts in India, it contains several palaces known for their intricate carvings and expansive courtyards inside its boundaries. On the second gate, imprints of cannonball hits by attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen. Chhatri of Kirat Singh Soda, a soldier who fell on the spot defending the Mehrangarh Fort, is located on the left side.

Jayapol (meaning 'victory') built by Maharajah Man Singh to commemorate his victories over Jaipur and Bikaner armies forms one of the seven gates of the fort. Maharajah Ajit Singh constructed Fattehpol (also meaning 'victory') gate for proclaiming the defeat of the Mughals. Moti Mahal, the Pearl Palace is one of the most prominent period rooms of the fort.

Largest of the fort's period rooms, this room was built by Raja Sur Singh (1595–1619). Maharajah Abhaya Singh (1724–1749) constructed the Phool Mahal that has a ceiling rich in gold filigree. Maharajah Takhat Singh used to reside in the Takhat Vilas that has glass balls on its ceiling, testifying the modern age that arrived with the British. Mirror-work of brightly painted religious figures made in plaster adorns the Sheesha Mahal.

Royal legacy

Most popular tourist attraction in Jodhpur hence a must visit. Best if you go without lift (unless one is old enough to walk) and tour guide as everything is well written at all the places. Fort has fabulous collection of paintings (I found it best part of fort), royal textiles, armory etc. Fort also offers spectacular view of city line as the fort is situated on a hill. I found ticket for lift, guide and parking is very expansive. . People travelling by car found it difficult to locate through Google map as it may lead to narrow lanes of Jodhpur and one may struck up. Search for nagori gate and then mehrangarh fort.

Get the high of how the royals lived!

A must visit place while in Jodhpur. Royal items, mirror room etc will blow one's mind for sure. While in there spending time in the royal museum is a must. The bird's eye view from the top is just windblown. One can enjoy the view of blue houses of Jodhpur all lined up beautifully. Also highly recommend Flying Fox Zipline tour conducted in Mehrangarh Fort. It is a unique experience conducted by experienced folks and one can get beautiful views of the fort which is otherwise not possible while on the fort itself.Tip: If you are a slow moving person or want to go around just for photography better not to take the guide and slow down the entire group. A better option is to understand the fort with the guide and then go around again at your own pace.

Gives you complete view of Old Jodhpur which is Blue in colour

We visited Jodhpur in August 2016. It was hot in spite of having a month of rain until last week. We visited the Mehrangarh fort, jaswant thada and umaid bhavan palace on our first day in the sun city.Mehrangarh fort: this fort is one of the most magnificent forts of not only Rajasthan, but entire India. It is located on the top a rocky hill and took centuries to get fully constructed. Given the height and width of the fort, it gave protection and strength to the city in true sense. The name means sun (Mehran) and fort (garh). The most interesting thing about the fort is that govt has made it very tourist friendly with brilliant quality audio guides and elevators at a little extra cost. Inside the Fort are nested temples, throne of the rajaji, traditional marwari paintings, arms and ammunitions of the army etc. On the top of the fort we were awestruck to see "toppon ki I. E. A queue of cannons to protect the city from invaders and enemies. While heading back, we took the slope way and were mesmerized with the views of the Blue city the fort offered. It was breathtaking and supreme!!!Entry fees : rs 75 for Indian nationals and rs 500 for foreign nationals.Time taken: 2 hours

Allure of the fort is so powerful

Standing as an epitome of the enormous strength and might of Rajasthan, the Mehrangarh fort, located in the city of Jodhpur, is one of the largest forts in India (Believed to be haunted as well). The allure of the fort is so powerful that it compelled Hollywood director Christopher Nolan to film certain scenes of his ambitious project "The Dark Knight Rises" using the charismatic beauty of the fort in the backdrop.
