“Missionaries of Charity” or Mother’s House in Kolkata was the residence of Noble Laureate Mother Teresa. She spent her initial years in Darjeeling’s Loreto Convent and then came to Kolkata to join the St. Mary’s School as principal. Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity is the seat of humanitarian activities, which has created many homes for the orphanages, disabled, sick, homeless and many more.

Mother established her first home for sick and dying people known as “Nirmal Hriday.” She had also established “Sishu Bhavan” for the orphans, disabled and mentally retarded people, “Shanti Nagar” for Lepers and AIDS hospices, where education is also provided to affected children.

Mother’s Missionaries of Charity has established such homes in US, Italy, Cuba, Australia, Tanzania and other nations of the world. Becoming a volunteer of this charitable institution is quite simple as no criterion is set for anybody. Volunteers need to do everything from dusting and caring wounds in two shifts - morning and evening. Around the world, there are more than 4950 sisters and 766 centres of this charity working.
