Mysore Railway Museum Overview

Ranked 30 of 147 sightseeing in Mysore

The Mysore Railway Museum was the first Regional Railway Museum in India which was set up in the year 1979. Most exhibits displayed at the Mysore Railway Museum were once accommodated at Mysore Palace.

The Mysore Railway Museum depicts pictures as well as objects related to the development of Indian Railways. Sri Ranga Pavilion and Chamundi Gallery are the two prime attractions of the Mysore Railway Museum.

The Chamundi Gallery showcases a distinctive collection of photographs, portraits and signalling signs that point out the growth of Railways. The wooden pillars, doors and balustrades from the old Srirangapatna Railway Station have been incorporated during the construction of Sri Ranga Pavilion.

Sri Ranga Pavilion consists of two royal coaches that once belonged to the Maharajas of Mysore. The Maharani’s Saloon Carriage is a popular exhibit at the Railway Museum which can be dated back to 1899. The first Steam Engine that was built in India is also on display at the Mysore Railway Museum.

There is also a battery operated mini train, a toy train, at Mysore Railway Museum to take visitors for a ride along the grounds.

Excellent place to visit with kids

The Mysore railway museum is located just behind the railway station. Old steam and diesel engines, carriages which are out of commission are on display. A brief history given under each exhibit makes it even more interesting. The best part is that we are allowed to climb into each of these exhibits and get a feel of an engine driver. The Maharani's saloon coaches shows us how royalty used to travel in the olden days. A decent play area and a toy train ride makes it an enjoyable outing even for toddlers. It has toilet facilities and lots of benches to sit around. The staff is friendly and helpful. The only thing missing is an eatery. However you can carry your own food and have a picnic. All this facility is for Rs15 per head (even in 2016 !! ). Toy train ride costs an extra Rs. 15. Camera and video recorders are charged extra. You can however take pictures on your Mobile for free. It is open only till 5:30pm

Railway station with a super special facility

It is located 3 km from city bus stand. Several trains can be picked here. Mini emergency hospital facility available. Good pick up and drop facility available for aged persons. Several book stalls can be seen here. I advise travellers to go to this place for the best train travelling point.

Small little place for Kids

Rail museum in Mysore is just before backside gate of Mysore Railway station. Entry is Rs 10/- for adults and it is open till 5:30 p.m. (Monday Closed). It is much smaller in size as compared to Delhi Rail museum yet it is a quieter place where kids can see and experience the engines and bogies of yesteryear. They also have cross section of an engine and model of braking system which is good for educational purpose. Highlights of this museum are: 1) Toy train ride which costs around 20/- per person. Albeit it is a short ride but kids would be excited to see at least one moving machine in the entire place :)2) Maharani Saloon - They have displayed the train which ferried Mysore Maharani around. You can see her bedroom, Dressing area, Kitchen, Servants' place etc from the window. It was a good peek into the Royalty. There are a few swings/slides for kids as well. But, looking at the state of museum it isn't well maintained and don't think gets too many visitors. I urge Govt to market it better before it becomes one of the lost attractions.
