Navagraha Temples Overview

Ranked 4 of 29 sightseeing in Karaikal

The Navagraha Temples, dedicated to nine grahas in Hindu mythology, form a group of nine different temples that are located in and around Karaikal. Featuring the architectural styles of the Chola Empire, the grahas enshrined in the temples are believed to have association with the nine celestial bodies.

The Suryanaar Temple is the only one dedicated to Graham or the celestial body while the other eight are ancient temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The six temples of the group are known as Thevaram hymns and are believed to be constructed between the 5th to the 10th centuries.

I visited all navagraha temples with my family. It took 3 days with hectic planning.Starting from Thirunallar Saneeswarar temple, then Thiruvenkadu Pudan temple, Keelaperumpallam Kethu temple, Sevvai temple at Vaitheeswaran kovil. Stay at Annai Residency at Kumbakonam .Excellent hotel with 5 star amenities and cost wise ok. Next day visit Kanjanoor Shukran temple, Suriyanar kovil suriyan temple and Thirunageshwaram Raghu temple.Next day Alangudi Guru temple and last Thingaloor chandran temple. On the way to thingaloor we can visit Swamimalai murugan temple and Pateeswaram temple if time permits as bonus visits. With good planning we had darshan of all deities.

Navagraha Temples

I started my trip from Mayiladuthurai. I took a car to see all the Navagraha Temples. It required me one day to see all 9 temples. I started at 6 am and completed by 8 pm. In most of the temples the parking charges are high. But the crowd is less. We stayed in the temple Thirunageshwaram at Raghukala time. Temple is closed between 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm we have to plan accordingly. At that time we chose a long distance temple.
