Nohkalikai Waterfalls Overview

Ranked 2 of 24 sightseeing in Cherrapunjee

Nohkalikai Waterfalls, located at a distance of 5 km from Cherrapunjee, is the fourth highest waterfall in the world. Falling from a height of 1,100 ft., the legend associated with these falls is as popular as the attraction itself.

A local woman, Kalikai, who remarried discovered that her new husband did not like her daughter and was not in favour of the child living with them. His discomfort turned to jealousy when he realised that his wife's affection towards the little girl was more than what he felt he deserved. Driven to despair, he decides to kill his step daughter.

One day, when Kalikai was away working, he slaughters the girl and uses her flesh to cook a meal. Upon reaching back and not finding her daughter at home, she plans to search for her outside. Her husband asks her to first have her lunch before going out. After completing her meal, she is shocked to find her daughter's fingers in the basket. Realising the gory act committed by her husband and her own unintentional part in the death of her beloved daughter, she rushes out and, in her profound grief, leaps off a tall cliff. It is this "fall of Kalikai" that has lent to Cherrapunji one of its prime attractions.

The ideal time to visit Nohkalikai is during the monsoon season when the falls are at its most spectacular. A viewing gallery allows the visitor to take in the vista which is, often, at the mercy of the mist that sweeps in frequently. A flight of stairs also takes tourists down to more viewing points. For those who are adventurous, a trek from the iconic double root bridge also leads to the base of Nohkalikai, followed by the climb back up the stairs to the viewing gallery.

Fall from clouds.

Highest waterfall in the country. One can trek up from the viewpoint up to the place from where the water gushes down. A bird's eye view of Bangladesh is another attraction for this waterfall. Eat at the cafe at the view point and enjoy the chill of the place.

With an expert driver everything is easy

Our holiday was arranged by Leisure Travels and they had probably sent one of their best drivers, Akash. It is due to his skilled driving that we saw this and many other natural attractions. The turquoise waters, lush greenery and gushing sound of falling water were truly spellbinding and left us awestruck.

Actually the whole Cherrapunjee is heaven on earth. The epic view of waterfalls, hills valleys .. Clouds gives you immense pleasure ... Make your day beautiful. The freshness you feel is awesome.Nohkalikai falls is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. So it's very beautiful ... The voice of waterfall is so nice ... It's. Wish I could go down just in front of it in any way.

A nice place to have fun

Remember to take camera with battery fully charged as you would need it throughout the trip to Cherrapunjee. This fall can be enjoyed the best in the month of June till august. Entry fees is applicable for vehicles and camera. Also buy some cinnamon. They are cheap and of good quality.

A great experience

The breathtaking view atop the Viewpoint is quite wonderful. You get a glimpse of not only the waterfalls and its ultra clear blue green water but also the amazing valley and if you can see beyond the hills you can see the plains of Bangladesh. Overall another great experience.

Nice scenic place

This waterfalls has a great scenic view, the falls is always covered with cloud. From the viewpoint we have to wait patiently for the clouds to move and have a nice view of falls, but the clouds move only for 2-3 minutes, during that moment we need to take the snap and view the falls.

Beautiful Viewpoint

Nohkalikai Waterfalls in Cherrapunjee is one of the chief attractions in Meghalaya. The view point from where the waterfall is visible is a beautifully decorated place. There are concrete stairs through which one can also get down to the base of the waterfalls. The place remains misty mostly, the waterfall is best visible on a sunny day.

Magnificent and serene waterfalls

We visited Cherrapunji in February, away from the Monsoon season; however even then this place was a beautiful sight. It is a long climb downstairs to reach close to the base of the falls, however the effort is worth it. The roar of the waterfalls can be heard from quite some distance. Great place for photo sessions, need to come during the monsoons once to experience the full glory of the falls.
