Jata Shankar

Legend has it that Lord Shiva, after seeing the penance of his devotee Bhasmasura, granted him the boon to burn down anyone to ashes by touching his head. Bhasmasura in his arrogance wanted to reduce Lord Shiva to ashes and to disguise himself from the demon, Lord Shiva shed his ‘Jata’ (his hair) in this cave. The devotees throng this cave to worship the jata of Lord Shiva. The entrance to the cave presents a natural rock structure of the mythical snake deity “sheshnag”, which can be accessed through a narrow staircase.

Another of Lord Shiva’s hideout from Bhasmasura, Gupt Mahadev Cave Temple is so narrow that it is said that only two people can enter at a given time. Adorned by a Shiva Linga inside, the cave temple has a huge Hanuman statue at its entrance.

These splendid cave temples have stood the test of time and are a mystic get away for curious tourists and ardent Lord Shiva devotees.
