Pancha Rathas Overview

Ranked 3 of 22 sightseeing in Mahabalipuram

Five Rathas is a rock-cut temple built in late 7th century by the Pallavas. These Five Rathas are named after the Pandavas and other characters of Mahabharata. Draupadi Ratha, Dharmaraja Ratha and others   comprises the five rathas.

UNESCO has classified this architectural work as a World Heritage Site. Dharmaraja Ratha is the largest multi-storeyed temple and Draupadi Ratha is the smallest among all these cave temples. Based on the Buddhist viharas and chaityas, these temples are carved out from one  piece of huge rock.

Draupadi Ratha is the first ratha located at the entrance and is shaped like hut. This ratha is dedicated to goddess Durga. The next ratha is Arjuna ratha, which is devoted to Lord Shiva. This ratha only has carved pillar stones and small portico. On the pillars of Bhima ratha temple, lion carvings are made.

On Nakula-Sahadeva ratha, huge elephant carvings are made, which are dedicated to Lord Indra, the god of rain. The tallest among all is Dharmaraja Yudhisthira ratha and is devoted to Lord Shiva.

Describes the old Indian architecture

Made in 7th century makes this place 1400 years old. Visited this place this January. It's 60kms from Chennai. This place describes the old Indian architecture. The rathas are neatly carved on the stone and it's a delight to watch. Visiting in winter is good as summer is very hot there. Also visit nearby places like lighthouse and the shore Temple.

We visited the place which was about 1400 years old. There are five Rathas ( Temple ) named on character of Mahabharat namely Draupadi Ratha, Dharmaraja Rath etc. Definitely a Good place to visit. This place is ahead of Arjun Penance. This under ASI. Be aware of Guide, confirm fees first otherwise they will ask more money.

Excellent Examples Of Art

This village is full of heritage, built during Pallava. Five Chariots or Panch Ratha are the best rock cut Temples, which are considered as excellent examples of Pallava Art. All are different in style and these structures are named after Pandava brothers. These are monolithic Temples and each is constructed in different pattern and style. And four of them supposed to be created by a single rock formation. Very attractive as thousands of tourists are daily visiting.

Important historical monument

The Pancha Pandava Rathas actually in the tribute to the five Pandavas and Draupadi. There are 5 chariots, as well as a statue of Nandi, an elephant and a lion. The history of the place is really impressive, especially when you consider that the entire place has been carved from a single hillock. Speaks volumes of the artistic and architectural skills of the artists of the generation, and the pinnacle of art under the Pallava dynasty.

Curved from a single stone - Wonder

This is must see for any person in India. The entire Panch Rathas are curved from one stone - which is unbelievable. One of the major interesting factor is that these rathas show the architectural beauty of pan-Indian styles - Eastern, Eastern, North Indian and Dravidian styles.

Awesome - One of its kind

Pancha Rathas are one of its kind. Just to imagine that these all are curved out of a single rock brings lot of respect about the artisans. The entire beauty lies on its fusion of design. The design covers temple styles from East, North and Middle India, in addition to Dravidian style.

Heritage temple

The temples dedicated to the Hindu god lie in the south of Mahabalipuram. These rathas are huddled together and seem like a building but actually, they are carved out of a single rock. You can enjoy the beautiful carvings and the craftsmanship in this heritage temple.

Good historical place to visit in Mahabalipuram

Its in one acre, these are rathas/chariots of pandavas and draupadi. They are made of stone with wonder carvings. If you like reading/seeing carvings meticulously from close angles then buy ticket. Otherwise you can see it from the periphery.
