Parasnath Hills Overview

Ranked 2 of 4 sightseeing in Mukutmanipur

In Jharkhand’s Giridih District, a range of hills named after the 23rd Tirthankara of the Jains, Parasnath is located. The tallest peak in the range of hills is 1350 m, which is considered a pilgrimage centre for the Jains. This peak is named as Sammet Sikhar. It is said that out of the 24 Tirthankaras, 20 Jain Tirthankara have attained deliverance on this hill.

There are 20 tuk or gumti or shrine of these Tirthankaras on the Paraswanath Hill. Although, a few temples on this hill are assumed to be old by 2000 years, most of the temples are recently created. This hill is named Marang Buru by the Santhals, which means the deity’s hill. In mid of April, in the Hindu month of Baisakhi, these santhals celebrate a hunting festival, on the day of full moon.

Highest point in Mukutmanipur

This place is the highest point in Mukutmanipur, from where you can have a good look at the Kangsabati River and adjoining Dam, and also the nearby Jungles. There is an old Shiva Linga worshipped by visitors, which is why the name of the hills is Parasnath. Local vendors will be found selling Coconut Water, Sugar Cane Juice, Chips and other food items. The best time to visit is early morning or dusk, as afternoons are quite hot. Do not expect to find eateries or washrooms around the place. Generally it will take a maximum of half an hour to reach this place from nearby hotels, resorts or guest houses. Abundant boats are available to take you to this place. Do carry water and a lightweight bag, as the height may bother you.
