Patna Museum Overview

Ranked 4 of 40 sightseeing in Patna

Patna Museum is located at a distance of about a kilometre from central Patna.  Built in 1917 during the British rule, this museum is constructed in Mughal and Rajput architectural style and is commonly called as Jadu Ghar. This museum houses several metal and stone sculptures that date back to the Gupta and Mauryan Eras.

It is also home to the First World War cannon and a 16 m long fossilised tree, which is around 200 million years old and is considered as the longest fossilised tree of the world. The museum is also home to the paintings from the British Empire along with the painting related to the life of the first prime minister of India Dr Rajendra Prasad.

The oldest museum of Patna showcases various sculptures and beautiful art work along with eccentric terracotta figures. Although the museum looks old and faded on the outside it still has a splendid collection of Buddhist sculptures, Jain images, Buddhist Bodhisattvas, and Chinese art. One of the major attractions of the museum is a sandstone piece of Yakshi or a female attendant, who is holding a flying whisk.

This also comprises a Buddhist Relic Gallery, which is home to a stupa found in the year 1958 in Vaishali, which is said to contain the ashes of Gautama Buddha. The museum is located at a walking distance from the Indira Gandhi Planetarium.

Awesome museum depicting the history

This museum houses some of the awesome animal life things on display in their original skins. The animals, birds, insects and butterflies all look so alive and vibrant. The ancient history of Kingdoms of India has also been preserved and depicted very well. Loved the stone artifacts and relics.

Old museum with a modern look

Centrally located and a must visit to every person visiting the city. The place has lot of valued stuff for people to see. Please do not carry food as it is not allowed to be taken inside the museum premises.
