Qutub Shahi Tombs Overview

Ranked 36 of 410 sightseeing in Hyderabad

Qutub Shahi Tombs, the tombs of 7 Qutub Shahi rulers, is situated about 850 meters away from the Banjara Darwaza of Golconda Fort. These tombs are considered among the oldest monuments in Hyderabad.

Planned and built by Qutub Shahis, these tombs are constructed by grey granite, on an elevated square platform. These tombs are dome-structured and have a quadrangular shape. Each of these tombs is at a height of about 9 – 15 meters from the platform and is surrounded by pointed arches.

There are small tombs as well as large tombs among Qutub Shahi Tombs. The smaller tombs have single storey and larger tombs have double storey. The stucco ornamentation of Qutub Shahi Tombs can be seen even today but the blue and green tiles, which covered the domes of these tombs, were destroyed with the passage of time.

The largest of all Qutub Shahi Tombs is the tomb of Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah, the fifth king of the Qutub Shahi dynasty.  This tomb reaching up to a height of about 42 meters has 28 open arches, a large dome and minarets at its corners.

The tombs of Qutub Shahis were once decorated with carpets and chandeliers. Golden spires were used to distinguish the tombs of Sultans from those of nobles and all tombs were given velvet canopies on silver poles. The verses from the Holy Book of Quran were recited in regular intervals.  It is said that the criminals who seek shelter in this place were forgiven by the Qutub Shahis.

Qutub Shahi Tombs are surrounded by a garden named Ibrahim Bagh that contain ponds and planted pathways. This garden is a popular picnic spot in Hyderabad. The tombs were renovated in the early 19th century by Salar Jung III, Mir Yousuf Ali Khan.

The Qutub Shahi Tombs exhibit a unique blend of Persian and Indian architectural styles. Today, Qutub Shahi Tombs are the venue of the Deccan Festival conducted by the State Government.

Lovely architecture

These huge structures are in one huge compound. Most of the tombs are under renovation. There are English speaking guides available for Rs. 100 if you join others or you bargain. Each tomb is an architectural marvel. The place is dirty with construction materials and ill-maintained garden leaves. One tomb with minarets could not be reached because of renovation. The central one has two tombs inside. At the back, a small river is there. Since the place was dirty, I could not enjoy the sunset.

A peaceful place to visit at any time of the day .

This is a very well maintained ASi site. The restoration of this place, has started in the last few years. ASI, AGHA KHAN TRUST & TATA Trust are doing a very good work in restoring the world heritage. The entry fees is only Rs. 20 / person. Cameras/ Mobile are an additional each ( I do not mind paying of each Mobile we carry- The place is worth capturing). Car parking is also available inside, bit it cannot accommodate many cars- Take your luck . The whole place is well maintained. No littering anywhere. Restoration work can be seen. But still lot of places people have scribbled there names on the wall. We should have strict rules to stop such misbehaving people . The lawns are well laid A very peaceful place, at any time of the day. Since I went there during the rainy season, I could continuously hear the beautiful scream of the Peacocks and sweet sound of other birds. You will feel very relaxed and peaceful coming to this place.

A really maintained historical park

I went here during the day and it was a wonderful experience. It's an expansive park with tombs littered around. Really well maintained and not too crowded. It's a great place to relax and be surrounded by history and beautiful architecture.

Wonderful place to visit. Must visit here.

I got lot of fun here than any historical places. I enjoyed boating here by spending cheap money. Nothing is expensive here. At morning sun rise is very beautiful. Rope climbing is very interesting. Food is organic and very cheap. Environment is awesome. Flora and fauna is endless. All things are wonderful. NH 6 gives beauty this place.

A Final Destiny of the Sultans and their family members even the Royal dancers Taramati and Premamati's Tombs are also in this Royal court as they were the courtesan of Sultan Abdullah Qutub Shah, rest beside his tomb, and they were performing dance and music and later a place besides the Qutub Shahi's family's allotted just a great tribute to these artists. This is also known as Ibrahim Bagh. Smaller tombs are single storey and the larger one are double. Just at the centre of tomb the actual burial or Grave is situated.
