Raigad Fort Overview

Ranked 1 of 9 sightseeing in Raigad

The Fort of Raigad also called the ‘the Gibralter of the east’ is a monument of prophetic vision of Hindavi Swarajya and used to be the capital of Maratha sovereign. This fort was maintained and nurtured under the supervision of Chhatrapati Shivaji. It is placed at an altitude of 2700 ft on a wedge-shaped rock, making it inaccessible from three sides. To reach this fort, the ropeway provided for the purpose is to be used.

This ropeway is known as the Raigad Ropeway and was constructed by Jog Engineering Limited (JEL) in 1996. The premises and surroundings of this fort include the Samadhi of Shivaji and his loyal dog along with the Balekilla, which provides the views of Sayadris and the Bhatghar Lake. It also provides a panoramic view of places like Rayreshwar, Lohgad, Visapur, Tikona, Purandar, Vichitragad and Sinhagad.

Raigad fort

Visit Raigad fort to understand the history of Maharashtra and also about the great maratha king Shivaji Maharaj. Raigad fort was capital of maratha empire and best time to visit is just before or after the monsoon. Avoid going to this place in monsoon as konkan faces a very heavy rainfall. There are two huge events held at the fort called rajyabhishek sohala or coronation ceremony. It is really worth visiting.

Excellent fort to visit

Shivaji Maharaj has made this fort his capital in 1674 when he was crowned King of a Maratha Kingdom which later developed into the Maratha Empire eventually covering majority of modern-day India. You can access the fort by Cable car, however, the trekking is my preferred route. You get to see a very nice landscapes during your trek to the fort. Also, you will miss a few strategically important places when you come by a cable car, like the Ganesh Darwaja, which is the primary entrance to the fort. This entrance is designed in such a way that the attacker will be confused when he tries to enter the fort, and hence can be easily defeated!

Raigad Fort - An Adventure

Raigad Fort is 150 km from Pune. The Fort, which rises 820 metres (2, 700 ft) above sea level, is located in the Sahyadri Mountain range. There are approximately 1737 steps leading to the Fort, though today Raigad Ropeway, an aerial tramway, exists to reach the top of the Fort in 20 minutes. It is situated in Mahad. It was the kingdom of Chhatrapati Shivaji maharaj in the late 17th century. One needs an experienced driver to be there through ghats. Once you reach till ropeway you can complete the remaining distance by ropeway cart which costs around 150 rupees per person. After reaching the Fort you can find many guide there who will show you the entire palace and walk you through history related to it. Since it has a temple as well I recommend one should visit that place purely.

A good and new experience

You need to take a ropeway to go up the Fort! During the Rainy seasons there's a waterfall just near the way which the Ropeway takes which gives a delightful experience. The Fort is a big one and is said is one of the Fort where Shivaji used to stay. Surrounded by the Sahyadri Hills, it gives you a ecstatic nature view.

Architecture is nice

The concept behind massive construction is super. The king can hear every words of person in hall from his chair and it is working today also. The size of hall is more than size of football ground.

Indeed a capital fort

It was initially a Rayaree Fort, but later groomed as the Capital fort and named 'Raigad' by Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He was incarnated here and declared the establishment of Hindavi Swarajya - a rule of native Hindus.Motorable road is upto base village Pachad. To reach atop the fort one can climb at 1400 wide steps. It takes about one & half hour to climb while descending takes just an hour. There are refreshment stalls along serving fresh lemon juice and energetic buttermilk as well as packed munches. If you are a group of 5-6 or more, then climbing the steps is surely advisable. The another option to go up is cable car, which has guided group tour included. It takes just 15-20 min to travel.Atop there is MTDC Resort and Restaurant. It is highly recommended to stay atleast overnight. Also food on order can be arranged by locals, which has a unique taste. There are several places to see viz. Raj Darbar, Ganga Sagar Lake, Takmak Tok, Jagadishwar Temple, Hirkani Buruj, Bajar etc. At base, in Pachad village, there is memorial of Rajmata Jijau - mother of Chattrapati.

Fun in trekking all along and go well equipped

One of the most amazing forts to go for, the capital of Shivaji Maharaj's kingdom, best time is rainy season, with a group of friends. I spent one full day there and it has been the most memorable trek dotted by innumerable picturesque waterfalls. One should get ready to get all wet, phones, wallets should be keep aside. Morning breakfast compulsory even though there are some vada pav stalls available at the foot of the fort. Takmak Tok at the top is a wonderful view but one should be careful at the top. Wear shoes with a good grip as it gets slippery near waterfalls and keep one full day aside to enjoy to the fullest. No point in using the ropeway, the fun is in trekking all along.
